Turns Out That Nick Foles Contract Isn’t As Bad As Expected

-

When the Chicago Bears traded for Nick Foles last month, a lot of fans were up in arms. How could they do that? It had to be one of the worst contracts out there and now the team was bringing it onto a payroll that didn’t have a lot of wiggle room to begin with. They basically just torpedoed any hope of future flexibility in case they wanted to make another bold move.

Except it’s easy to forget that GM Ryan Pace knows what he’s doing when it comes to cap concerns. He’s regularly shown he understands how to negotiate contracts to a point where it benefits both sides. In this instance, he had to find a way to keep Foles happy while also structuring that contract to where the Bears could afford it.

According to Ian Rapoport, they accomplished that mission. While Foles would make the rest of his guaranteed money, the rest of the structure would be more incentive-based. This allows the Bears to secure more than $7.5 million on their cap. Thus they get a decent quarterback for a late 4th round pick at an affordable salary. Everybody wins.

Nick Foles will have a chance to earn more

While the Bears don’t have a lot of space left, they do have enough to absorb their incoming draft class. They also could end up getting more by restructuring one or two deals of high-priced veterans and hopefully getting an extension done with Allen Robinson. So the team appears to be in fairly good shape. In regards to Foles? There is plenty of motivation for him going into this season.

Not only because of how poorly things went in Jacksonville but also financial ones too. If he claims the starting job and plays well, he could add an additional $6 million to his earnings. That is a healthy chunk of change. The Bears wanted to make sure he couldn’t just settle for the backup spot. They want him to put heat on Mitch Trubisky.

This should do it.
