Trevis Gipson Is Using Novel Method To Improve His Pass Rush

-

Trevis Gipson understands last season was a disappointment for him. After posting seven sacks in 2021, he managed only three last year despite switching to a scheme he felt was a better fit. So he’s approached the 2023 off-season with a clear purpose. He intends to show everybody that last year was a fluke. As a result, he’s been open to any and all ways of giving himself an edge (no pun intended). One method he might be exploring comes from another sport—Mixed Martial Arts.

Chicago Bears cameras followed Gipson as he got the opportunity to meet with Bellator heavyweight Daniel James. Often known as “The American Predator,” James is a Chicago native with 15 wins and seven losses in his professional career. That includes five victories in his last six fights. One thing MMA fighters must understand how to use is their hands. It requires speed, finesse, power, and coordination. The same can be said for pass rushers. The video shows James giving Gipson some tips on his hand usage and some ways to gain an advantage in body position when in close quarters.

Trevis Gipson isn’t the first player to take this approach.

Former Bears villain Clay Matthews embraced Muay Thai during his career with the Green Bay Packers as a way to help enhance his abilities. It’s hard to say it didn’t work, given his success. A pass rusher is only as good as his arsenal of moves. The more you have, the more dangerous you become. Rookie Dominique Robinson learned this the hard way last year. He had only a few go-to moves. Once blockers figured out what they were, his effectiveness as a pass rusher completely tanked.

Trevis Gipson recognized that reality almost right away. He’s been working non-stop to evolve his approach each off-season. He’s still upset about the number of sacks that got away from him last year. With a new contract on the line, the clock is ticking for him to have that career-best season. The Bears have stayed patient with him. They believe he has the capability to be a long-term starter. It’s on Gipson himself to prove them right. Otherwise, they will go hunting for someone who can.

Wing Chun and Boxing. Best two hand fighting arts in the business.

Wing Chun may be better for linemen. They practice something called ‘sticky hands’. Teaches hand techniques when both opponents are in close quarters.

Watch film of great pass rushers and adopt their best techniques. Talk to their position coaches. You can be great.
