Tremaine Edmunds knew exactly what he was getting into when he signed with the Chicago Bears. He wasn’t under any illusions. The Chicago Bears are in the middle of a rebuild. They’re coming off the worst season they’ve had in years. However, that didn’t bother the two-time Pro Bowler. If anything, it motivated him. He’s the type of guy that loves playing the role of underdog. Helping the Bears transform back into a contender was a big selling point. So was the opportunity to play with Justin Fields.
Edmunds is no stranger to playing with freakish quarterbacks. His entire career in Buffalo was spent alongside Josh Allen. He knows what happens when you have a great athlete like Fields under center. That was the first thing the linebacker mentioned during an interview with NFL Total Access. He also referenced the standout leadership and work ethic qualities. However, there was something else Edmunds mentioned that was interesting. He’s already noticed Fields’ has a tendency to do something young quarterbacks need more time to learn.
That is spreading the ball around.

Looking back at the 2022 season, it immediately stands out how Fields evenly distributed the football. Four players were targeted at least 40 times. None of them cracked the 70 mark. That speaks to a quarterback who didn’t play favorites with the football. Fields looked for the open man, wherever he ended up being. Even Jalen Hurts, an MVP hopeful last year, threw more than half of his total passes to either DeVonta Smith or A.J. Brown. Maybe Fields was doing it out of necessity. Then again, it reflects a maturity that is typically reserved for 10-year veterans.

Fields operates like somebody who understands the game. He knows predictability is the greatest weakness a quarterback can have. By evenly distributing the football as much as possible, it keeps defenses constantly guessing about where it will go on the next play. That improves the odds of producing positive results. It is why guys like Joe Montana and Tom Brady were so successful. They were surgical in their approach, not caring where the ball went as long as the play was executed properly.
Tremaine Edmunds can already see the potential benefits.
