The Chicago Bears have their fair share of stunner picks over the past 40 years in the NFL draft. Nobody saw them taking William Perry in the 1st round during the 1985 draft. The same was true of Brian Urlacher in 2000, Shea McClellin in 2012, Kyle Long in 2013, Mitch Trubisky in 2017, and Darnell Wright in 2023. As you can see, sometimes it works, and other times it fails spectacularly. There is no reason to believe it will be any different this year. Even if the Bears hold the 10th overall pick, there is a real possibility they could pull another shocker.
Finding a specific player with whom they could fall in love is the tricky part. There is no shortage of talented options in this draft, but most don’t meet the necessary criteria. However, after careful examination, three names emerged as legitimate threats.
Keep these names circled for the Chicago Bears.
TreVeyon Henderson (RB, Ohio State)
All the talk about a possible 1st round running back this year centers around Ashton Jeanty from Boise State and Omarion Hampton from North Carolina. Not enough people are talking about Henderson. His speed and explosiveness are exceptional, and he adds value as a great pass protector who got better as a pure runner last season. He’s drawn several comparisons to Jahmyr Gibbs, whom the Detroit Lions took 12th overall a couple of years ago. Ben Johnson was there when that happened. Do you think he’d be dissuaded from taking a similar playing only two picks early at #10? It is unlikely the Bears go that route, but do not dismiss it.

Matthew Golden (WR, Texas)
There is no way the Bears would spend back-to-back top 10 picks on wide receivers, right? It has only happened three times in the NFL since the turn of the millennium. Still, it is evident Johnson is seeking more speed at the position. Golden ran a 4.29 at the scouting combine, and it shows up on his tape. He can take the top off a defense, move inside and work the middle of the field, and isn’t bothered by tight coverage. Best of all, he always seems to play his best in big games. That is something Johnson said he wants more of. A trio of him, Rome Odunze, and D.J. Moore would be fun.
Derrick Harmon (DT, Oregon)
One position people haven’t talked about enough is nose tackle. Andrew Billings has been great the past two years, but he’s 30 years old and coming off a torn pec. The Chicago Bears don’t really have anybody behind him ready to step up. Harmon is big, long, and powerful. He can hold his ground against double teams and uses good leverage. On top of that, he showed major progress as a pass rusher last year with five sacks. This is a guy who can impact the game in multiple ways, just like Billings. Is #10 too high? According to experts, yes. Still, good players become good players no matter where they are selected.
