They say first impressions are everything. Thomas Brown certainly didn’t disappoint. The 38-year-old has experienced a whirlwind unlike anything seen before. He arrived in January as the Chicago Bears’ new passing game coordinator, got promoted to offensive coordinator in November after Shane Waldron was fired, and has now gotten promoted to head coach after Matt Eberflus too was dismissed. It is the most rapid in-season rise for an assistant coach in Chicago sports history. One would think he’d look a little overwhelmed and uncertain in his first press conference with the new title.
They would be wrong.
Brown looked calm, relaxed, and prepared when the meeting began. His opening statement left no doubt about who was in charge now. Every question the media may have had for him was answered before they could even ask.
His first goal?
Subscribe to the BFR Youtube channel and ride shotgun with Dave and Ficky as they break down Bears football like nobody else.
“I talked about making sure our house is right to begin with. Initial goal is to unify this football team. No more divisions”
What identity does he want for the team?
“Football is a violent game and rewards those who play the game violently.”
Staff plans?
Chris Beatty will be the new offensive coordinator. Brown will still call plays on offense. Eric Washington will call plays on defense.
On the end-of-game problems?
“I am not exempt from responsibility in those actions. We’re a team and I believe in doing things together.”
It felt like Brown was never not in control. He knew what had to be said. Nothing was left out. That level of command and attention to detail was foreign to his predecessor at times.
Dr. Mel. Keenan will coach the WRs, obviously. He’s a greasy dude in the middle. I’m hoping Odunze is sponging the heck out of him. Kramer needs to go find Kreutz. Edmunds needs to go find a protractor.
I’m with @jmscooby on this: if the second half Bears offense had shown up in the first half, the Bears would have won that game something like 34-17. Detroit wouldn’t have had 5 first half red zone trips scoring 3,7,3,3,0, they would have had 3 red zone trips max, and the Bears would have put up a few more TDs for an easy win. I’m tired of the Bears playing like a Super Bowl contender for one to one and a half quarters a game, and like a bottom of the barrel team the rest of the time. Here’s hoping… Read more »
It’s a solid defensive scheme and I’ve seen several teams win SBs with it. Washington will turn up the heat, but losing Billings took away some of our inside push. Brown needs to get our offense to come out of the gate firing instead of waiting until the 4th quarter(although it’s nice to see us show up in the 4th for a change). Then our D will thrive. Our HC wasn’t entirely to blame in this. Players, especially captains, need to take accountability that we underachieved this year. Poles needs to quit trying to win “pretty”, and get some punch… Read more »
Great to see that all of the franchise’s problems are fixed now.
David.. 💯 💯 about fans getting to have a bit of excitement with the HC change. I don’t know if he will do great or terrible, but I do know it’s a lot more exciting to find that out than it would be to watch 5 more fk’n Flus games.
