The Bears Receive More Good News After Week 5

-

We’re almost done with Week 5, and the Chicago Bears have seen vast improvement. Despite their 1-4 record, there’s a sense of hope that they can potentially change their course and, at the very least, make the season more exciting. A major factor contributing to this optimism is the impressive offensive performance in their last two games against the Washington Commanders and the Denver Broncos.

Justin Fields and the offense are finding their stride

One major reason to be optimistic is Justin Fields. In his last two games, he has racked up impressive stats: 699 total yards, 8 touchdowns, and a rating of 131.5. As a third-year quarterback, he is starting to hit his stride. What makes this level of production sustainable is the way the current offensive system is tailored to Fields’ strengths and the abilities of his teammates. Luke Getsy, has designed it almost perfectly. DJ Moore is performing like a superstar wide receiver, and has significantly boosted the offense. Additionally, the return of key players on the offensive line is no coincidence; it complements the offensive production well. Let’s take a look at Fields’ rankings through the first five games:

Tied for 2nd in passing TD with 11.

12.2 yards per completion, 4th in NFL.

95.4 rating, 12th in NFL.

228.6 passing yards per game, 15th in NFL.

191 rushing yards, 3rd in NFL among QBs.

The Bears have become more intriguing, but the real test lies in whether they can maintain this level of interest for the remainder of the season.

The Bears control the 2024 off-season

The Chicago Bears are once again in a situation they’ve experienced before. Just like in the 2023 off-season, they’ll be in complete control next year. Right now, they hold the first and second overall picks in the 2024 Draft, and they also have the largest amount of available cap space in the NFL for next summer.

Now, you’d hope that the pick the Bears own won’t end up being the second overall pick this season. On the other hand, I’m confident that the Panthers will have the first overall pick which currently belongs to Chicago. Bryce Young doesn’t have much support, and it’s uncertain how he’ll perform. Personally, I’ve never been fully convinced of him. If Justin Fields continues to prove himself as franchise quarterback, the Bears could trade that first overall pick for a historic haul, possibly even more than last year’s pick, thanks to the highly-rated prospect that is Caleb Williams.

This move could set them up for success for years to come. However, if Fields wants to stay in Chicago, he’ll need to continue to grow and demonstrate that he’s the long-term solution which won’t be an easy task. But this outcome would be the best for the franchise as it would allow them to build a strong team around Fields for the foreseeable future, primarily through the draft as General Manager Ryan Poles has indicated he wants to do, but also through free agency, thanks to their improved financial stability.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The story hasn’t reached its conclusion yet. Fields had 2 good games, but another poor performance will kick the Caleb Williams conversations right back into gear as if they never ended.
