Normally when a quarterback competition is going down, teammates tend to keep their personal opinions to themselves. They don’t want to rock the boat or cause any hurt feelings. Or they simply have no clue and convey as much. No such issue seemed to exist for Ted Ginn Jr. The veteran wide receiver joined the Chicago Bears back in May, stepping right into the Mitch Trubisky vs. Nick Foles battle.
Ginn is no stranger to quarterback controversies. He was a member of the San Francisco 49ers in 2012. The same year longtime starter Alex Smith was unceremoniously replaced by Colin Kaepernick midway through the season. So he has somewhat of an idea of the awkward situation he’s walked into.
That didn’t stop him from making his feelings known for who he thinks will win the competition. He told the Good Morning Football crew on NFL Network as much.
“Right now I believe that Trubisky’s going to be our starter. We’re going to fight as much as we can for him. We’re going to fight as much as we can for any quarterback. I think that’s why you bring in your leaders and your veterans and your different people to help that guy out no matter if it’s Nick or Trubisky. So I’m willing to fight for whoever it is. I’m going to play for whoever it is and that’s all you can really do.”
Why is Ted Ginn Jr. so confident in his answer?
Ginn didn’t explain why or how he reached his conclusion. Clearly it’s just a personal gut feeling. So what might have brought on this conclusion? Perhaps the simple circumstances of the situation. Foles hasn’t even met any of his teammates in person despite having been traded to the Bears back in March. This is due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While he’s stayed glued to his playbook, that doesn’t help with forming connections and chemistry with the guys he’s supposed to throw to. Ginn included.

Trubisky has taken full advantage of this. Being in Chicago already, he’s able to conduct private workouts with teammates whenever he wants. He’s already established connections with these guys and is getting there with newcomers. By the time training camp starts, he’ll have a good flow with everybody on the field. Something that Foles will have to try picking up fast. Something that isn’t easy to do.
This likely explains why the receiver sees Trubisky as the guy. At least when the season begins.
