The Chicago Bears set their agenda after the arrival of Ben Johnson as the new head coach. Everything had to be about maximizing the situation around quarterback Caleb Williams. That meant investing in the spots around him. It started with the offensive line as they acquired three new starters at guard and center. Then beefed up the depth at both wide receiver and tight end after that, improving their speed and run-blocking. Next came an investment in Williams’ education. Chicago signed veteran quarterback Case Keenum on Thursday.
The 37-year-old has been in the NFL since 2013, starting over 60 games and serving as a reliable backup for seven different teams. His dependability was on full display in 2017 when he replaced Sam Bradford midseason and led the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC championship. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment has been mentoring multiple young quarterbacks. This benefit has former Super Bowl champion Jason McCourty believing the Bears got themselves a steal.
Case Keenum is willing to play the veteran role.
He’s proven it multiple times over the past few years. It started in 2020 when he backed up Baker Mayfield in Cleveland. The former #1 overall pick had played well over the first two seasons but was inconsistent. That year, he delivered the most efficient campaign of his career, throwing 26 touchdowns and just eight interceptions while leading the Browns to the playoffs. Then, in 2022, he joined Buffalo, where he helped Josh Allen navigate a recent coordinator change to post his second-highest passer rating to date and making his second Pro Bowl.
Last but not least, Case Keenum went to Houston in 2023, where he assisted in the development of #2 overall pick C.J. Stroud. The rookie had the best passing season in NFL history and got the Texans to the playoffs. The guy seems to have a positive impact everywhere he goes. It isn’t a secret why the Bears wanted him. McCourty crossed paths with Keenum multiple times in his career. He’s as aware of the quarterback’s reputation as anybody. This is a good sign.
