Seems The Buzz Around Justin Fields In Pittsburgh Keeps Getting Worse

-

Justin Fields wanted to go somewhere that fulfilled two desires. They would allow him to compete for the starting job and have a more proven history of winning. The Pittsburgh Steelers checked both boxes, so the Chicago Bears accommodated the former 1st round pick by sending him there. Unfortunately, he faces a big problem. Russell Wilson is the one he’s competing with. While the seven-time Pro Bowler isn’t the player he was a couple of years ago, he is still a far more proven passer. Also, it appears Fields still hasn’t fixed some of the primary issues with his own passing ability.

One of the primary criticisms throughout his time in Chicago was his inability to throw with good timing and anticipation. Fields was putting in work with James Everett Jr., a wide receiver trainer nicknamed “The Route God.” NFL veterans Diontae Johnson and Jarvis Landry were also in attendance. During drills, Fields was throwing several curl and hitch routes. It was here people began to notice something. Former Steelers Pro Bowl Le’Veon Bell decided to voice it aloud.

Everett quickly countered those statements, stating the seemingly late throws were due to Fields doing some progression work. It doesn’t appear to have convinced anybody, if only because three years of game action back this assessment up.

Justin Fields still can’t escape his past.

Nobody has ever denied he is a tremendous athlete with a terrific arm. The problem has been the failure to realize those two things alone don’t make great quarterbacks. You must be able to think the game out at lightning speed. That means assessing defenses pre-snap, reading coverages post-snap, and understanding where to go with the ball, all in the space of three seconds. That requires timing with his feet and knowing how to throw to the spot on the field where the receiver will be, not where he is. The ball arriving late leads to two things: either a missed opportunity for yards after the catch or a potential turnover.

People have insisted up and down for three years that Justin Fields would get there. He’d learn how to do it right. Unfortunately, this isn’t something you can learn. If it were, every quarterback could do it. There is a reason this is the hardest position to play in professional sports. The processing of information alone is massive. Fields is a smart young man. Nobody disputes that. The problem has always been he can’t think fast enough. Sadly, that is the primary reason he is where he is now.

People blamed the Bears for not surrounding him with enough talent and coaching and not giving him enough opportunity to grow. The reality is, only the Bears are dumb enough to give him as much of an opportunity as he got.

Al of you “know-it-alls” with a JF man-crush who feel you know more than every coach in the NFL, get a clue. Saying all of his flaws can be corrected proves you are living in fantasy land. You do realize this is the loser’s 4th year in the NFL and in all this time nothing has changed? JF, now known as one read and run, still does the same thing and HAS NOT been able to fix his problems. Still can’t read defenses, still can’t pass accurately and always runs when his first read is covered. Do you understand it’s… Read more »

Erik wrote: “Unfortunately, this (timing of throws) isn’t something you can learn.” I absolutely call BS on that. I assert that Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Y. A. Tittle, Dan Fouts, Otto Graham, Sid Luckman, Sammy Baugh, Johnny Unitas, John Elway, and all the other all time top 25 or so NFL quarterbacks were not born knowing how to throw with anticipation and timing. It is a learned skill. Some learn it faster than others. While reports out of Pittsburgh are that Fields has still not learned it, that doesn’t make it impossible, it just… Read more »

All of us – Fields supporters and critics alike – said he had a problem with holding the ball and timing on his throws. Honestly, in all the time I followed Fields here I can’t remember anyone who thought / said otherwise. It wasn’t right when he came into the NFL, and it wasn’t fixed while he was here. The part I don’t get – how was this supposed to be fixed in Pittsburgh with just a few months of offseason and mini camp that coaches there have had to work with him? Are we supposed to believe that the… Read more »

I’m not getting the JF poor performance updates, who cares he’s in Pitt. But if we must get these updates please give us deep reads into other former Bear QB’s in the NFL. I’m sure everybody wants to know all about Dalton, Peterman, and Trubisky 😂. Seriously, how has Bagent looked? Is he locked in at #2?
