If there is one thing we’ve learned about GM Ryan Poles, it’s that his phone lines are always active. Few are willing to work the trade market more than him. The time of year doesn’t matter. He proved that again this week by sending a 6th round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for veteran pass rusher Darrell Taylor. That fills a key need for the Chicago Bears on defense. Some fans are wondering if he may strike again, seeking to add another piece. However, they may want to flip the think the other way. Given the depth the Bears suddenly have at several positions, it is possible they could trade one of their own players for something in return.
One name gaining traction on that front is Khalil Herbert. While he’s been a capable runner for the Bears over the past couple of years, his value to the team has shrunk since D’Andre Swift arrived in March. Roschon Johnson is a better blocker than Herbert, so he’s safe. Travis Homer also has special teams value. The final straw was the team moving Velus Jones from wide receiver to running back. So not only is he their top kick returner, but he just finished the preseason with 158 yards on 25 carries.
Herbert just doesn’t have enough versatility to justify a roster spot anymore. That is why the Bears could look to flip him to a running back-needy team.
Ryan Poles may have some takers for Herbert if he works quickly.
A few teams stand out as possible landing spots. The Dallas Cowboys haven’t solved their ground game problems all summer, even after bringing Ezekiel Elliot back. Then there is the Houston Texans, who don’t seem to have anybody who fits their outside-zone scheme well. Herbert was at his best in that type of offense. Lastly is the New York Giants. They just lost promising rookie Tyrone Tracy to an injury. Devin Singletary and Eric Gray are their only other options. Herbert would at least give them some flexibility.

One thing to remember is never underestimate Ryan Poles. He has a way of finding value for players who may not have any. He got a 4th round pick for a washed-up Robert Quinn and a 6th round pick for the disaster that was Chase Claypool. Herbert is a good running back who is still cheap and only 26 years old. Some team should be willing to give up a late round pick for him. That would make the trade for Taylor look even better. Final cuts take place on August 27th.
With I Wheeler headed to IR, V Jones will be the recipient of the final RB spot. It could become the best decision in his career a wise move by Eberflus & Co if injuries hit the RB room. Jones and Herbert would make for a solid RB situation if Swift is injured. R Johnson is the one who appears to be the bubble going forward with the current development of V Jones and the addition I Wheeler potential for 2025.
Herbert is a proven rusher. If Poles can get real value in a trade, ok. Otherwise, don’t give away our best backup RB.
Homer, the special teamer, needs to go. I’d rather keep a CB or LB.
Velus or Wheeler could be the breakaway threat the Bears lack.
BTW, I’m not sold on Roschon. Other than being a good blocker, he’s not a real offensive threat.
We better hope Swift stays healthy because it’s a long season and the RB room needs to be improved.
