Ryan Poles Let Slip When Bears Will Likely Add Another RB

-

The hard truth about the NFL off-season is that a team rarely addresses every major need. Free agency and the draft can help you improve quickly, but solving every concern is difficult. Resources are rare, and 31 other teams are vying for them. The Chicago Bears learned that lesson the hard way this spring. GM Ryan Poles and head coach Ben Johnson had hoped to add another significant presence at running back to pair with (and maybe replace) D’Andre Swift. However, free agency and most of the draft passed without any investment in the position. Their only notable move was drafting Kyle Monangai in the 7th round.

Inevitably, this led to widespread speculation that the Bears would go hunting for help on the veteran market. Rumors already persist that former Pro Bowler Nick Chubb is somebody they’re eyeing. David Kaplan had the chance to speak with Poles on ESPN 1000 about the running back issue. He asked if it’s possible the Bears will be adding one sooner rather than later. The GM did say the door remains open, but for the time being, it sounds like the coaching staff prefers to see what they have first.

Ryan Poles should have a clearer picture by June.

The Bears have rookie minicamps starting in early May. Organized Team Activities (OTAs) start May 20th and go through early June. That will give coaches a solid month to evaluate what the running back room looks like. Eric Bieniemy is one of the sport’s best running back position coaches. If he gets the sense they’re missing something, Ryan Poles is sure to take his recommendation seriously. Currently, the Bears have three viable options on the veteran market. Chubb is the biggest name. Others include J.K. Dobbins, who had over 900 yards last season for the Chargers, and Jamaal Williams. He famously scored 17 touchdowns in 2022 for the Detroit Lions, which was Ben Johnson’s first year as offensive coordinator. Expect movement within the next month at the latest.
