The Chicago Bears have three weeks left before the trade deadline on November 5th. At 4-2, they are squarely in the playoff picture. A lot can change in three weeks, but there are good reasons to think this team will be poised for a run going into the second half. Their next three opponents are Washington, Arizona, and New England. They should win at least two of those games. Knowing this might explain why Ryan Poles is keeping a close watch on the trade market.
A source informed SM that the Bears GM isn’t afraid of taking a big swing at the deadline. His previous deals for Chase Claypool and Montez Sweat prove that. The only question is whether anybody out there is worth the push. Based on current information, two names have his attention: pass rushers Myles Garrett and Maxx Crosby. Both reside on teams hurtling toward the NFL cellar. The Last Vegas Raiders are 2-4 and just traded Davante Adams to the Jets. The Cleveland Browns are 1-5 and traded Amari Cooper to Buffalo.
It is apparent that both teams are open for business. If they’re looking to accumulate draft capital, Crosby and Garrett are their best assets.
Ryan Poles’ interest in them is perfectly logical.
Crosby has 5.5 sacks in five games this season. He has made three straight Pro Bowls with 57.5 sacks at age 27. There is no question he is one of the best pass rushers in the league. Only Garrett is better. The five-time Pro Bowler has cracked double-digit sacks in each of the past six seasons. Presuming he stays healthy for another few years, he will lock up a spot in the Hall of Fame. Yet, after so many years of losing, he might be done trying to drag that organization to relevance.

Try to imagine what would happen if the Bears paired either one of them with Montez Sweat. The defensive line was already good. Such an addition would make it unblockable. Crosby and Garret both have two years left on their current contracts. It would give the team a chance to keep the tandem together for a brief window. Everything depends on what price Ryan Poles would have to pay. History says it may cost at least a 1st round pick and a Day 2 pick. Is he willing to go that high?
Given the array of pass rush-needy teams around the league, including the division rival Detroit Lions, it might be too much.
“A source informed SM that Poles is not afraid to take a big swing at the trade deadline. His deals for Claypool and Sweat Prove that.” So wait a second. Poles makes deals at the deadline that we all see, yet we need an unnamed source to confirm he is not afraid to do what we have all seen him do? Why does this…specifically Poles’ apparent willingness to “swing big”…need sourced? Everyone from my dead grandmother to my football-stupid wife knows that Poles has been willing to make deals to try and make the Bears better. As I read this… Read more »
Keep an eye on Mohamoud Diabute with Cleveland. UDFA LB for a franchise that is about to implode.
@jmscooby — I’m not grading a rookie six games into his season. I’m trying to get the “let’s build through the NFL Draft” crew to realize that the man selecting those future NFL draft picks — GM, Ryan Poles — makes imprudent selections. Amegadjie is his latest; Velus was his first — and Tyler Scott, Zacch Pickens, Dominique Robinson, etc., etc., were the filler, in between. _________________ Kiran “Tape Don’t Lie” Amegadjie was the best Ryan Poles could do at #75, in 2024? No way! I liked LB, Payton Wilson, PFF’s #32 of 81 ranked NFL LBs — with a… Read more »
I agree with mbearest’s logic. Why in the heck would we give up a 1st right now for anyone, really? I told ya’ll to get out of that rut. We actually have a franchise QB that will keep us in games. Our “window” is open for the next decade if we maintain a solid OL with depth each year. I’d keep recycling stud draft picks at the CB position, and keep a mastermind at the safety position. Mooney is a solid player. I thought he got a bad rap last year, and his QB got tunnel vision for another WR.… Read more »
@Veece You are biased as usual. You must have watched “fair and balanced” cultish FOX for decades. I believe TGena writes very clearly and succinctly. He just puts out a lot of facts and stats to convince you about matters. If you were not so biased, then in just this thread, you would have criticized Dr. Melhus about his intentional three long comments, Mr. Sheriff. But you did not. That is hypocritical on your part, and I have been a judge, mediator, analyst, and evaluator for most of my life. As for me, just look at the first comment coming… Read more »
