The Chicago Bears have solidified their roster for the 2024 season. In a crazy twist, it feels like quarterback is among the most settled. Caleb Williams is firmly entrenched as the starter. He’s the #1 overall pick and widely considered one of the best prospects to come out of college in years. Behind him is Tyson Bagent, the former undrafted free agent who overachieved in relief of Justin Fields last season. He had an excellent preseason last month, showcasing further growth. The Bears even stashed another promising undrafted rookie, Austin Reed, on the practice squad.
There have been zero indications from GM Ryan Poles or anybody else that the team might be looking for alternatives at the position. They are happy with what they have. Apparently, this hasn’t stopped some wild speculation about a potential move coming at some point. The latest rumor might be the craziest yet. According to TWSN, they believe Chicago can, should, and will make a move to acquire former #2 overall pick Zach Wilson from the Denver Broncos.
“Wilson’s performance this preseason showed that he still has the tools to succeed in the NFL. However, with Bo Nix entrenched as the Broncos’ starter, the path to meaningful playing time in Denver is blocked. A move to Chicago could provide Wilson with the opportunity to learn from a coaching staff that values his skill set and to eventually compete for a starting role with a different team…
…This would be a landing spot for him to potentially build up his name for a potential starting gig elsewhere.”
The Chicago Bears have zero reasons to do this.
The article’s arguments center around two main factors. One is that Wilson exhibits a similar play style to Williams with his mobility and desire to make plays outside the pocket. The other is his strong preseason showing. Wilson went 28-of-44 for 397 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Not bad. People have already started wondering if Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton, a renowned offensive guru, has fixed what the New York Jets broke over the past few years. People neglect to remember Wilson went 15-of-20 for 191 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions as a rookie in 2021.
Making such a bold statement based on preseason performance is a recipe for disaster. Wilson is a backup now for a reason. He had three years to show something in New York. Sure, the situation around him wasn’t always great, but let’s not forget Mike White, a journeyman backup, outperformed him. There are zero reasons for the Chicago Bears to make this move. There is no evidence to suggest Wilson is a better option than Bagent. Why give up a draft pick to find out?

Hey Rocket, I can talk football all day. I have no ill will towards anyone on here, and I think I downvote about once a month. But when the white noise and bickering happens, I’ll bust out my 9 part “Phantom of the OBoe” I’ve been working on. Choreography is on point.
So the guy who has so far shown himself to be a bust really looked good in the preseason facing 2nd and 3rd stringers. I have news for ya, Eric; Rypien, Bagent and Reed graded out better than he did in the preseason. The only QB that didn’t was Williams, if you can believe that. That should tell you all you need to know about preseason grades.
Thing is, Bagent will be a starting QB for a team somewhere in the near future. He didn’t embarrass himself last year when he stepped in for four games for Fields. Most his interceptions were trying to make a comeback at the end of the games. He didn’t get the opportunities to practice with the first unit but still stepped on the field and seem to have more of a command of the offense than Fields ever did.
