Price Tag For A Chase Young Trade To Bears Revealed

-

One thing about Ryan Poles is that he’s never shy about making a move that will benefit his franchise. That includes making trades at the deadline. He made three of them last year. Roquan Smith and Robert Quinn were sent to other teams for draft picks, while Chase Claypool was acquired from Pittsburgh. Obviously, the results from those trades were mixed. However, it likely didn’t dampen the Chicago Bears GM’s aggressive mindset. He has plenty of draft capital in his inventory if he wishes to make a deal for a player who may help the team. One name that continues to get mentioned is Chase Young.

The Washington Commanders are in a tough spot. Their decision to pay Da’Ron Payne his new contract has made it obvious they won’t be able to keep both of their top defensive ends, Young and Montez Sweat. Rumors persist that one will get traded before the deadline while the other gets paid. Sweat is the more reliable option with a largely clean health history. Young is three years younger and more dynamic, but he also missed loads of time with a bad knee injury over the past two seasons.

League insider Jordan Schultz of The Score has it on good authority that one of them will be traded. He even included the probable price tag.

Chase Young is worth the risk of a Day 2 pick.

Remember where the Bears sit in this situation. They have two 1st round picks next year. Both of them will likely end up in the top 10. Poles could easily use one of them to maneuver down the board for more picks. That means unloading a 2nd or 3rd to Washington for Young or Sweat would be worthwhile. One of the hangups about any deal is the fact the acquiring team would have to start negotiations on a contract extension immediately. You don’t want to trade a valuable asset for half a season of work. For many, that might be a problem.

Not the Bears. They’re currently projected to have well over $100 million in cap space next off-season. They can easily work an extension with either player and have plenty left over. Chase Young is the bigger risk but has a higher upside and fits the Bears’ long-term plan better. His presence across from Yannick Ngakoue might finally unlock their dormant pass rush, making life easier for their talented secondary. It is a move that could benefit both now and in the future. It comes down to whether other teams drive the price up.
