Predicting the Bears’ Next Major Contract Extension

-

Welcome back to my series of player previews for the 2024 NFL season, leading up to training camp. The Chicago Bears have a new quarterback and a mix of familiar faces on both offense and defense. Although the expectations aren’t as high as some seasons, they’re still quite optimistic given the team’s talent. In this series, I’ll provide quick previews and my season projections for many key players. Today we will focus on Bears G Teven Jenkins. Can Jenkins play a full season?

Teven Jenkins

2023 PFF Grades:
Overall: 72.6 | Pass blocking: 71.7 | Run blocking: 68.6

One of the biggest storylines for the Bears heading into the 2024 season is the state of their offensive line, particularly the interior. Both guard positions have big questions to answer, and the center spot remains a concern. Focusing on Teven Jenkins, the issue lies more with his health than his performance. When he’s on the field, Jenkins is one of the best guards in the NFL. However, his frequent unavailability is why a long-term deal isn’t being discussed at Halas Hall this offseason.

In 2024, Jenkins will be playing for a big contract, but his ability to command a high salary will depend on his health. If he stays on the field, I expect him to be a Pro Bowler next year due to his talent. Jenkins will also be a crucial piece for rookie QB Caleb Williams. I predict that Jenkins will secure a contract extension, which will be a well-deserved payday for him and a good deal for the Bears, considering his injury history.

Still one of my favorite players. I’m rooting for you TJ. I believe TJ should be allowed to play RG all year. Let Davis compete for a swing guard spot. Put Bates at LG. Shelton can start at Center. Get another DE and Guard on the roster and train the rookie to be a swing OT. Keep at least 9 OL as we have a rookie QB.

I hope, but do not necessarily expect, Teven will remain with the Bears after this year. I certainly would not bet money on it.

Jones —

If you think it’s that simple — you haven’t been paying attention.

From the beginning, Ryan Poles has had “issues” with Jenkins (and the other Ryan Pace-acquired Bears linemen).

The competency of a an NFL GM is determined by how effectively he identifies the “force multipier” players — the ones that enhance the “combat” potential of the entire team.

Incompetent managers promote the underqualified (Lucas Patrick, Alex Leatherwood, Nate Davis, OL coach, Chris “C-Mo” Morgan, etc.) and by doing so, erode trust and credibility within the organization.
