One Wild Card That Could Impact Chicago Bears’ #1 Pick Plans

-

One thing to keep in mind about the ongoing discussions around the Chicago Bears‘ plans for the #1 pick is that it’s still early. Never mind the fact that free agency hasn’t even happened yet. Several teams haven’t even found new head coaches. Those decisions could go a long way in determining how organizations approach their quarterback questions. Until more clarity arrives, the Bears must sit tight and wait it out. Perhaps there is no bigger wild card on the board than Sean Payton.

The future Hall of Fame head coach is widely viewed as the best option available this cycle. Several teams have expressed interest in him. Multiple interviews are set up. It will require a trade with the New Orleans Saints to pull off, but the demand for his services appears high. The critical factor here is that Payton is an offensive guy. His success stems from his ability to elevate the quarterback position. Most of the teams seeking his services don’t have one. That could increase the urgency to move up to #1, hoping to land somebody he covets.

The Chicago Bears would like Payton in specific locations.

One is the Houston Texans. His going there would virtually guarantee they’ll take a quarterback #2 overall, as if that wasn’t apparent already. The same goes for the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers. Both teams have no quarterback. His arrival would only reinforce the urgency to get one. Don’t forget this man used high-level espionage to try forcing a union with Tom Brady in Miami. He’s willing to go to incredible lengths to land a quarterback he likes. That would serve the Bears well come April.

Signs already point to there being significant interest in the #1 pick. Free agency and the trade market aren’t rich in quarterback options. A 45-year-old Tom Brady, pricey Lamar Jackson, and Derek Carr appear to be the headliners. All three would likely choose to join teams closer to contention. Tennessee, New York (Jets), and Washington come to mind. Is a team prepared to put their hopes in Jimmy Garoppolo? That doesn’t seem likely. There will be calls about the #1 pick. They’ve likely started already. Once mid-March arrives, the real fun should begin.

Not to be a downer here, but the Saints are reportedly seeking a first round pick for Payton’s services, which would reduce the draft capital available to trade for the Bears’ pick.

Except it’s been reported he wants to work with an established QB.
