People always talk about talent when it comes to the NFL draft. However, due to the nature of American football, fit matters just as much. The sport has such a wide variation of styles and systems. There are few athletes of such high quality that they can play in any scheme and still be successful. For example, a skinny, undersized wide receiver with blazing speed would be right at home in a vertical passing offense but completely useless in a run-oriented power game where receives must block. This is what Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears must factor into their evaluations.
Yes, they want the best players possible. Even so, they need ones who fit what the head coach wants to do. When factoring that into the equation for Chicago’s 10th overall pick next month, the conversation gets interesting. Brett Kollman of the Bootleg Football podcast is one of the best tape evaluators out there. After examining many top prospects in the 2025 class, he pinpointed which of them fits certain coaches around the NFL. He had one for Johnson.
Tyler Warren will be a tough debate for Ben Johnson.
Nobody denies that the Penn State tight end is a stud. He was impossible to stop down the stretch last season, finishing with over 1200 yards. He’s drawn comparisons to Jeremy Shockey and Greg Olsen. It is easy to see the appeal: big, strong, and fast for his size. Best of all, he isn’t a one-trick pony. It isn’t just about catching the football with him. He blocks, too. The issue for Ben Johnson and the Bears is do they really need him? They already have a solid two-way tight end with Cole Kmet. Taking Warren with a precious top 10 pick might feel like a luxury. That said, Johnson might be creative enough to make a two-tight-end package that can give defenses fits. It depends on whether he can justify it to GM Ryan Poles, who has good reasons to focus on premium positions like pass rusher and left tackle.
