America is not the most stable place right now. In addition to being one of the worst ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic, the country is now in a state of severe upheaval due to racial tensions. This following the controversial death of African-American man George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer who was caught on video leaning on Floyd’s neck with his knee. This caused him to eventually suffocate. This sparked protests in the black community across several cities, forcing city mayors including Chicago’s Lori Lightfoot to institute curfews while calling in the national guard to restore order. During this time, several athletes have spoken out in support of the African-American community. The first Chicago Bears player to do so? Nick Foles.
The newest quarterback to join the organization is a well-known Christian man. He’s deeply devoted to his faith and uses it as his strength towards everyday life. It’s only natural being around so many black men in football that these events would impact him. So he posted a message on social media to express those feelings.
Nick Foles is focused on football but won’t let that silence him
While there isn’t much Foles can do to solve these much bigger life issues, simply speaking about it does help. It adds to the message that something must be done. Odds are several of his new teammates feel the same way. No doubt many of them will greatly appreciate him having the courage to speak out on it. Those who played with him before said he was a one of a kind leader. This is an example of that.
Foles will start his competition with Mitch Trubisky this months. Plans are in place for teams to finally return to their facilities soon and start with live minicamp practices. From there will come training camp in July and the preseason to follow. It will be interesting to see how Foles handles such unique circumstances it what might be his last true opportunity to win a starting job in the NFL.
