A lot of people immediately downplayed the Chicago Bears 2020 draft class. They tried to give their arguments that it was because of the players they picked. Yet one got a sense with many of them that it was because they had no 1st round pick. That means it must immediately be an average draft. Chad Reuter, one of the top draft analysts for NFL.com didn’t see it that way.
When going over every class for all 32 teams, he came away impressed with what GM Ryan Pace was able to accomplish. Especially regarding what the Bears did in the later rounds.
“Day 2 grade: B+
Day 3 grade: A-
Overall grade: B+
Draft analysis: The Bears’ first-round pick this year was held by the Raiders as part of the deal for sackmaster Khalil Mack. They found a talented tight end in Kmet (whom I like more than most), though the pick gives them an absurd amount of depth at the position. Johnson was a good pick later in the second round, as well. Gipson is an underrated player who offered solid value in the fifth round. Vildor has many fans across the league. Hambright is an intriguing prospect with great upside for a seventh-round pick.”
Clearly while the Bears’ class might not be favored in the media light, plenty of people who actually work around the NFL like what they did.
The Chicago Bears 2020 draft delivered where it needed to
In truth, the Bears came into the draft with a specific set of needs. They needed another viable option at tight end. They needed a viable cover corner to replace Prince Amukamara and they needed a speed threat at wide receiver. All of these objectives were accomplished. Cole Kmet will pair with Jimmy Graham to form a much-improved pair of options at tight end. Jaylon Johnson is the most lauded pick of their entire class and viewed as one of the best cover corners. A 1st round talent who happened to fall.

One mustn’t forget Darnell Mooney, a receiver out of Tulane with a legitimate 4.38 speed. This doesn’t include Trevis Gipson, the talented pass rusher out of Tulsa. Kindle Vildor provides even more quality depth at cornerback. Then came Arlington Hambright and Lachavious Simmons in the 7th round to add some needed offensive line depth. It’s not a class that guarantees anything but it’s one that fills out the Bears roster in key areas.
That’s all one can ask for.
