New Info Indicates Mike Vrabel Is Off The Table For The Bears

-

There is no shortage of quality head coach candidates for the Chicago Bears to peruse this cycle. Most fans are hoping for Ben Johnson, which isn’t a surprise. However, there is widespread belief among NFL people that the best option out there is Mike Vrabel. The former Tennessee Titans head coach had four winning seasons in six years with what many feel was a middling roster. He’s still only in his 40s and appears eager for his next opportunity. His big personality, disciplined style, and attention to detail all sound like things this organization desperately needs.

He even has ties to the organization. GM Ryan Poles was a scout in Kansas City, where Vrabel finished his playing career. Both have a relationship with former GM Scott Pioli. Recently, Zack Blatt of The Athletic wrote a detailed article about the former head coach and what he’s hoping for with his next opportunity. Inevitably, the question came up about what his preferences will be. Two criteria stood out the most, both of which indicate the Bears won’t be in consideration.

There’s got to be clear communication with ownership, so that we understand as coaches what the expectations are,” Vrabel said. “That’s so we can explain to them what’s reasonable, what we can do, what we probably can do and what we’re going to try to do — or die trying. I want to have a structure in place that people see the game the same way I do from an X’s and O’s standpoint, from a personnel standpoint, with team-building. We would hopefully have that alignment, which is critical.

“And I would like to be able to say that there’s a quarterback that you feel like you can win with — or that there’s a path to find the one that you can win with.”

Mike Vrabel wants two things Chicago can’t offer.

Direct communication with ownership is not something the McCaskey family has offered in their entire history of running the team. They’ve made it clear there is a hierarchy involved with this organization. It goes head coach, GM, team president, and then owner. If the coach wants something, they must speak to the GM and president. The McCaskeys prefer to be hands-off. That probably won’t suit Vrabel well since a lack of communication will make it difficult for him to understand the franchise’s aims.

The alignment part is basically fancy speak for wanting to work with a GM he knows and trusts. While he might be familiar with Poles, Mike Vrabel probably does not know him personally, as he might know others. Unless the two somehow hit it off from the first meeting, it feels as if the coach might prefer bringing in somebody he wants. It feels like the Bears can’t offer him what he seeks compared to other locations like New York and probably Las Vegas. Maybe something changes, but it feels like Vrabel won’t be a contender for the job.

According to RoosterRider, Arnie is Einstein about a simple term. And he has the nerve to call anyone “a pea brain”? Now that is a moronic assertion by a businessman.

@TGena So, your theory is that because Ted Phillips chose to retire when he did, after the team hired a GM and coach, you must then fire everyone who came before the replacement president because they must be hired in the “proper” sequence from top down? Where on the planet, besides sports franchises that must cater to meatball fans’ wishes, is that even a thing? It’s literally nothing more than a fabricated concept created by people trying to come up with a justification to consolidate power and give their buddies jobs. And yes, your list of examples shows that some… Read more »

@Arnie — It seems the calendar refutes your view of NFL organizational alignment in numerous CEO/GM/HC hirings (except in the case of the LA Chargers — where HC Jim Harbaugh was hired prior to his GM of choice: Joe Horitz). Green.Bay Packers — CEO Mark Murphy Dec. 7, 2007 GM Brian Gutekunst Jan. 7, 2018 HC Matt LaFleur Jan 8, 2019 CEO Ed Policy June 24, 2024 Detroit Lions — CEO Rod Wood Nov.19, 2015 GM Brad Holmes Jan. 14, 2021 HC Dan Campbell Jan. 20, 2021 Minnesota Vikings — COO Andrew Miller Aug. 12, 2019 GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Jan.… Read more »

Thanks Arnie for explaining the “alignment ” issue that many of the pea brains here can’t understand. If Johnson and Poles have a good conversation on the direction they believe the team needs to go then all should be fine. Same with any coaching prospect. The GM and the assistant GM and the HC need to work together to succeed. Although I’m not a fan of Vrabel as I don’t think he accomplished anything in Tennessee. If mediocre is your goal he’s perfect for the job. I believe Johnson is the next O’Connell or Lafleur. If they miss on him… Read more »

All “alignment” means to most coaches in today’s game is that they want to work with a GM that listens to them and tries to obtain players that fit what they are trying to accomplish (exactly what Poles has done time and again in his three years) versus what other GM’s (like Trent Balke in SF) do that drive good coaches out of the building if they get too much credit. As for Vrabel himself, yes, he was a linebacker and a defensive coordinator before becoming a head coach, but as a head coach, if you listen to his former… Read more »
