BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — Mitch Trubisky is one of the most polarizing quarterbacks in the NFL. Chicago Bears’ fans largely love him. Other teams’ fans largely think he sucks. The media’s opinion is split on him, though they splash hype galore on his fellow draftmates — Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.
I’m on record saying Trubisky has shown enough promise to be hopeful and excited for 2019, but he’s also shown enough “WTF” where it’s fair to be concerned. This upcoming season is absolutely critical for him. If he takes the leap that he *needs* to take, the Bears should compete for the Super Bowl. If he doesn’t, then the Bears may be looking for a new quarterback earlier than anyone hoped.
So, will he break out? It looks like some NFL scouts think he will.
According to Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, an AFC scouting director told him:
Subscribe to the BFR Youtube channel and ride shotgun with Dave and Ficky as they break down Bears football like nobody else.
Hindsight is always perfect, right, but I loved him [coming out]. He was so accurate, crisp and athletic. [North Carolina] didn’t utilize his legs enough. I think Nagy will open that up more this year.
One of Matt Nagy’s former co-workers had this to share with Miller about why Trubisky is a perfect fit in Nagy’s scheme:
Obviously, Mahomes and Watson would fit what Matt does. But Trubisky works so well for that scheme because he can run the RPO stuff, and he’s solid enough to take some hits. You don’t have to worry about him getting banged up as much as you would a Watson or Lamar Jackson or Alex Smith.
Trubisky should certainly be more comfortable with Nagy’s offense in Year 2. One thing I’ve noticed about him is that when he has to “think”, he’s bad. And when he just reacts naturally, he’s largely excellent. That may be why Trubisky struggled so much early on last year outside of scripted plays — he was still learning the offense and constantly had to think. It was clear that the game slowed down for him as the season wore on, and he exhibited more growth and talent when he could just naturally react and throw.
Reports out of training camp are that Trubisky is really ‘running’ the offense now and is much more comfortable with things. That’s good news for the Bears. If he continues along this path, perhaps he’ll truly ascend to stardom in everybody’s eyes.
