The Chicago Bears haven’t said it outright, but the signs are impossible to miss. Unless something insane happens over the next three weeks, Caleb Williams will be their next quarterback. Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus have had nothing but good things to say about him. The team has met with him, his teammate, and his coaches extensively for weeks. Not once has it felt like any of the other quarterbacks have gotten near the same amount of attention. Maybe it’s an elaborate ruse by the Bears, but there isn’t any need for it. Nobody is jumping in front of them.
More than that, it appears Williams also isn’t too motivated to hide the reality. When speaking at his pro day about the Keenan Allen trade, he had a minor slip, stating “we” got him for a 4th round pick. Maybe an honest mistake or a signal that he already considers himself a Bear. If people needed more warning signs, eagle-eyed fans caught the quarterback liking an Instagram post showcasing an apartment in downtown Chicago. It feels like there is no reason for that unless the rumors are true.
Caleb Williams is likely already making plans for the summer.
Eberflus stated the team would continue the “install” during the quarterback’s private visit this month. In other words, they will teach him about their new offense under coordinator Shane Waldron. They would only do that if they were already planning to take him. What better way to spend the visit than giving him a head start on the scheme he’ll have to learn? Having prior knowledge of this also allows him to scour for a permanent home in or around Chicago. He should be well-prepared for training camp when it arrives in July.
The only complaint people should have about this development is it takes the element of surprise away from the #1 pick. Then again, that is hardly new. Everybody understood Jacksonville was taking Trevor Lawrence in 2021. The same was true of Joe Burrow in 2020. Sometimes, the decision is made well in advance. While that might not be great for television, it is good for the Bears. Caleb Williams is their guy, and almost everybody agrees he is the type of prospect who can push them to the next level.
Subscribe to the BFR Youtube channel and ride shotgun with Dave and Ficky as they break down Bears football like nobody else.
3 more weeks. Can’t wait for this pick to see where it goes. To have a legitimate QB with both existing talent and upside at the position will be new for us all. Exciting times ahead for the majority of us.
Would be awesome to see the Bears trade the #1 pick. 🙂
@scottbrs Caleb doesn’t have an agent, and Poles isn’t allowed to negotiate contracts with anyone other than the player’s representation — which in this scenario is Caleb himself. Poles can’t negotiate with a business manager or an “advisor” or, say, a family member, or whoever else unless they’re certified by the league. Caleb is not represented by anybody certified by the league. The Players’ Association publishes a list of every draft-eligible player and their certified representation, and Caleb’s representation is not on that list. So what you’re suggesting — for Poles to be negotiating with his reps to iron out… Read more »
Brad Biggs at the Tribune is reporting that they are erecting a statue of Caleb outside Soldier Field as I type this.
It’s definitely the right call. Rumors are swirling in league circles that commissioner Roger Goodell is making a new rule that would allow current players to be elected to the Hall of Fame so that Caleb can be nominated next February.
I am so ready to get to the dam draft!! I want to get CW locked in and know for sure we have him, and can’t wait to see what we do at #9. Beardown!
