More Details Emerge On Bears’ Internal Thoughts Of Caleb Williams

-

Everybody has heard the primary rumors regarding the Chicago Bears and Caleb Williams at this point. Guys like Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport have both indicated GM Ryan Poles and his people have a high opinion of the USC quarterback. High enough to where it is almost a foregone conclusion they are taking him with the #1 pick. However, some wondered if interviews between the player and the team might shift things in a different direction. First meetings took place at the scouting combine, where Poles and company could speak with Williams privately.

It is often hard to gauge a player in only 15-20 minutes, but first impressions can often say a lot about somebody. Certain players have that ability to fill up a room from the moment they step in. Initial updates said Williams handled himself well in front of the Bears, showcasing his intelligence and easy-going nature. Since then, Dianna Russini of The Athletic has heard even more about the meeting. She told the Hoge & Jahns podcast that the Bears are even more sold on Williams now than before the meeting.

The Bears appear set on their path with Caleb Williams.

Either he is cemented as the #1 overall pick or Poles is enacting one of the greatest misdirection campaigns in the history of the NFL. It is possible, but feels unnecessary at this point. All signs have indicated the Bears are ready to move on from Justin Fields. They watched him for two years. He didn’t showcase anything remotely resembling top-10 quarterback play during that time. Most of his highlights came from his phenomenal athletic prowess. Every draft expert worth anything has said with utmost confidence that Williams would be an instant upgrade.

The challenge for the Bears will be crafting an offense scheme that enhances his strengths while curbing his weaknesses. His uncanny improvisational skills and accuracy must be nurtured. At the same time, offensive coordinator Shane Waldron must teach him how to play with better timing and rhythm. Those who know him don’t seem concerned about such things. If given proper support, Caleb Williams has the ability to elevate a franchise. Poles seems prepared to give him that opportunity.

By the way, crafting a scheme? They should be crafting a scheme with Justin Fields. And they should be crafting the scheme in free agency and the draft. There is no guarantee that Caleb Williams is going to be the end-all be-all, there have been plenty of highly touted quarterbacks that completely bomb at the pro level. If that happens, they’ll all be going bye-bye.

Well if I was looking to stir up the market, I’d be telling everyone how wonderful Caleb Williams is! I would tell people that I will take him with the first pick. That being said, you will have one or maybe two teams? Maybe more? Trying to convince you to trade that pick So they can get Caleb Williams. And maybe they can change your mind with a little grease on the wheels so to speak. A little more Payola. After all, isn’t the object to fleece the dealmakers on the other side? So if the other side feels that… Read more »

In the reporters minds it’s a forgone conclusion the Bears will take Caleb Williams as the number one draft choice but nothing (absolutely nothing) Ryan Poles has done confirms that conclusion. In fact, with only 5 draft picks and several needs it’s even more obvious that the Bears will trade down to acquire more picks.

Reading the writing on the wall. No matter how you slice it, if the Bears trade the first pick for anything but the #2 or #3, I’ll eat the three college helmets of the ones that go #1, 2, and 3. Of course, seasoned to my liking. I have never been more torn about an athlete in Chicago as I am with JF. Great in everything except what we need most. That’s the long and short. Poles and company have finally come to that realization I think. I think the jury is still out on the pick itself, but time… Read more »

Williams is too small. Could be a repeat of Bryce Young.
