Mitch Trubisky is a nice kid. He’s always presented that type of personality from the day he was drafted. An easy-going smile. Patient with questions. Willing to sign every autograph he can. However, at the most recent press conference with the Chicago Bears media on Wednesday, something was different. While he still answered questions like normal, his replies were a lot curter. A lot shorter and more forceful.
While one must be careful to read too much into body language and facial expressions, it was clear enough the 25-year old quarterback was not happy. Quite the opposite. He seemed angry. Was it with having to talk to the media or more with himself over the fact his team is 3-3 and in danger of letting a promising season slip away? Knowing how competitive the young man is, it’s probably more towards the latter. That and the fact he’s probably well aware of the dangerous territory he is getting into.
If he puts on too many more performances like last Sunday, his hold on the starting job could slip away. This might explain why he was unusually candid about his play. Specifically one regarding a run-pass option in the second half where he took a bad sack from Cameron Jordan rather than just handing the ball off.
“I made a bad decision. (Cam Jordan) does do a good job with (making it look like he’s crashing the RB) but it would have been an easy handoff read. I was doing too much with my eyes on that. I never try to look at the running back and then do a free axis out route. So that was just bad by me. Should’ve been a handoff.”
Mitch Trubisky better use that anger while he still can
There is no getting around reality. Trubisky is on a timeline right now and it’s getting shorter. Ten games remain in the season. The Bears are 3-3 and on the outside looking in of a stacked NFC playoff race. They need to start putting some wins together. With the defense banged up, it falls on him to drag the offense out of its prolonged slump. Being pissed off has helped him in the past. He was clearly angry during the game against Washington a few weeks ago and threw three touchdowns. Maybe this is the secret to his success.

Then again maybe the anger is pointless.
One thing is for sure. It can’t possibly make him play worse. Trubisky has played scared to this point. It feels like he’s trying to do too much. He’s trying to be the hero on every play instead of just going out there and taking what the defense gives him. This is why he’s missing open receivers, seeing things that aren’t there, and lacks any sort of rhythm. Who knows. Maybe being pissed off and in fear of his job might be the thing that flips the switch.
