Since taking over as head coach of the Chicago Bears, Matt Nagy has delivered plenty of memorable quotes. Some of which he likes to use as mantras not just for football but life in general. His first one that the team embraced from the beginning of last season was, “Be obsessed.” In other words, embrace the work that’s required in order to be great at what you do.
However, the new favorite phrase that Nagy has stuck with since he arrived in Chicago is a slight variation on that. It’s “Be You.” This one has come with a little bit more mystery. What exactly does he mean when he says that to people and himself? He hasn’t had a chance to explain in detail with his busy schedule of late.
That finally changed when he had a chance to deliver a speech at his alma mater of Delaware during a graduation ceremony. There he revealed the origins of the phrase and the unlikely source it came from.
Matt Nagy embraces vital lessons that continue to drive him
Now fans are starting to see why Nagy has had so much success early in his Bears career. He has mastered the art of what it takes to be a good coach. It isn’t about the Xs and Os. At least that’s not the most important part. The key is about managing people. Who doesn’t like it when one of the biggest names in the organization remembers your name, or comes across humble, and likes to have fun?

Players and other coaches gravitate to somebody like that. It makes them want to not only work hard but play hard too. The fact that the man drew such inspiration from his son is a key reminder of why he prefers to run his team like a family. That is a reflection of who he is and who he wants to be. All he can and should do is be himself. Be the best person possible that he wants to be. Everyone else should strive for the same.
