Five days remain until the debates will end. The NFL draft will finally arrive. The Chicago Bears are ready. They have ten picks overall and four in the top 64. GM Ryan Poles has a golden opportunity to infuse this roster with much-needed young talent. What nobody knows is who the Bears may target or what their strategy might be. Probably the two most potent rumors of late are the idea they’ll take Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter #9 overall, or that they will trade down if they can find another team to come up. It appears one person brought some clarity on that subject. That is offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.
ESPN analyst Louis Riddick told Waddle & Silvy that he caught up with the Bears assistant down at the Alabama pro day. Riddick asked him point blank if Chicago was considering a change at quarterback away from Justin Fields. Getsy’s answer was brief and more than a little telling.
“I talked to Luke Getsy down in Alabama for the Bryce Young pro day and I was like, ‘Hey, you down here looking at these quarterbacks? You trying to find one?’ And he was like, ‘Nope. We got our guy, we just need to help him out. Protect him and get him weapons. And we’re doing a pretty good job of it. We have a good start.’ I could not agree more, so it’s not even a discussion in my book.”
The Bears already found Fields another weapon in wide receiver D.J. Moore. This statement suggests they’re planning to attack the offensive line early. There are four names that will be available at #9 they could go with. It comes down to whether Poles wants to risk losing out on one he covets by moving down.
Luke Getsy reflects the confidence Fields has built in Halas Hall.
While plenty of people continue to snipe the Bears quarterback for his pedestrian passing stats last year, most inside the building were thrilled with his progress. They knew he was operating under difficult conditions. His offensive line couldn’t protect well and his receiving corps lacked talent and depth. Injuries made things even harder. For him to still put up 30 points per game during a long stretch of the season is a testament to his talent and competitive spirit. The team likely wants to see what happens when they bring in more help.

Moore was a critical first step. Veteran free agent Nate Davis bolsters their interior blocking. Now the challenge is finding help at tackle. The Bears have no clear starter on the right side and could still use a definitive option at center. If they can lock down one of them in the first two rounds, Fields’ chances of success go up considerably. Luke Getsy will have his own opinions on who they should take. We may find out what they are, but not until after the dust settles next week.
