They say nothing hurts more than the truth. Well, the Chicago Bears got a healthy dose of it from Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. His team pulled off a wild comeback in the 4th quarter last Sunday, erasing a 26-14 Bears lead to win 31-26 in a span of four minutes. It was yet another gut punch for an organization that hasn’t tasted winning for five years. That didn’t stop St. Brown from gleefully rubbing salt in the wound during his weekly podcast with brother Equanimeous.
He came right out and called the Bears “choke artists” for their ongoing inability to close out games.
It isn’t something anybody wants to hear. Sadly, it’s also something that can’t be argued. That game was the second time in a calendar year that Chicago coughed up a 4th quarter lead to the Lions. Detroit did it last season at Soldier Field, too. There is also the brutal game against Denver, where the Bears coughed up a 28-7 lead to lose 31-28. Failing to finish has become their inescapable calling card.
The Chicago Bears won’t shake this stigma until they prove otherwise.
Choking in the 4th quarter is a symptom of a bigger problem. This team can’t win tight games, period. They are 2-11 in one-score games since Matt Eberflus took over last season. It is an undeniable trend. Part of it is defensive collapses. Another part is brutal offensive turnovers. Sometimes it’s both. The Bears have a constant inability to execute in the final minutes. That speaks to a team that is mentally weak. One can only hope a coaching change might help to correct the problem.

Equanimeous did have a point. He indicated that the Lions aren’t as strong of a contender as everybody makes them out to be. They coughed up a 14-point lead to the Chargers and barely escaped 41-38. They fell behind to a Chicago Bears team everybody thought was inferior. Let’s also not forget how thoroughly Baltimore dismantled them 38-6. They’ve played three teams with winning records this season. They are 1-2 in those games, and their lone victory was a narrow 21-20 score over Kansas City, where they were aided by several Chiefs blunders. Detroit is a good team, but they best be careful about tempting the football gods.
He should take a closer look at the Detroit Lions’ history. What goes around, comes around.
“You are what your record says you are.” Detroit is 8-2.
Watching the Bears all my life, seeing the likes of Trestman and Nagy has seemed to give me a sense of apathy with Eberflus and the organization. It’s sad I hated those previous coaches and at this point I really don’t expect much else from either and I should despise both yet I just don’t care anymore. I’m still a Bear fan, barely.
Trubisky was better as clutch in those situations. And we moved on from him and he’s a backup primarily since leaving.
Well too bad it’s so obvious that it doesn’t even sting.
