Justin Fields Says He’s Going After Another NFL Record

-

Justin Fields has captivated Chicago Bears fans and the wider NFL this season. Despite obvious problems with the roster around him, the 23-year-old quarterback has played Pro Bowl-level football for the past three months of 2022. That was evident again on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite losing right guard Teven Jenkins and wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown to injuries in the 1st quarter, Fields still finished with 152 passing yards, 95 rushing yards, and two touchdowns. It was a day highlighted by an epic 39-yard scramble to convert 2nd and 27, setting up a David Montgomery touchdown on the next play.

The big story coming out of the game was Fields breaking two records. He passed Bobby Douglass for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in a season in Bears history. The mark was 968. Then he crossed another milestone when he became only the third QB in a century of pro football to cross 1,000 yards rushing. Michael Vick and Lamar Jackson are the other two. Fields admitted he doesn’t plan to make running so much an annual thing, but he said he’d like to make one more mark on the record books before the season ends.

He wants the single-season rushing mark for a quarterback.

Justin Fields can absolutely get that record.

Jackson holds the mark with 1,206 yards in 2019. At 1,000, Fields has three games left to close the gap. That means he must average 69 yards rushing over the remaining games to achieve this. Keep in mind he’s topped that number seven times this season. So it isn’t difficult to fathom, especially with running back Khalil Herbert set to return from IR to help the ground attack. Fields was at his deadliest when Herbert was in the lineup. It will be interesting to see how the Bears approach this situation.

The Buffalo Bills are up next. They have one of the best defenses in the league. However, mobile quarterbacks have had some success running against them this year. Jackson had 73 yards. Even Jacoby Brissett had 29. After that comes Detroit, whom Justin Fields shredded for 147 yards in their first meeting. Lastly comes the Minnesota Vikings. There is a strong possibility they could rest their starters in the finale. So yes. The door is wide open for Fields to make more history before the process of making the Bears a winner begins in 2023.

Nice work, SpotTheT!
But don’t you think that Dante Pettis’ real “problem” is a lack of courage?
I have never seen an NFL player (of any size) head to the “safety” of the sidelines (out of bounds) as often as Pettis does.
Mitchell Trubisky had Talylor Gabriel who was reluctant to raise his arms in order to catch high passes — but Dante Pettis has established a new all-time low.
Maybe Ryan Poles should consult with SpotTheT before he makes another dumb personnel move.

Forget the personal records, Justin — and get back to what matters:: “doing your job” on an NFL winning team.

At the beginning of the year, i was looking to see an improvement in the passing game those quick dig throws that gave your guy a chance to beat his guy, then I saw the all 22 of the first 3 games. At that time Mooney was the only dog at reciever, but he was still learning his tree in tge offence, and the other recievers were running scramble routes kind of telegraphing the concept. Over the span of the season the bears have brought in Claypool, and Harry…….. Now Claypool is learning how to run the offense, but he… Read more »
