One thing about Justin Fields is that he is an absolute sponge when learning about the quarterback position. He’ll chew their ear off if he feels somebody has the advice to offer to help him get better. That was proven true when the Chicago Bears quarterback was spotted working out with some NFL veterans, including Tyrod Taylor, Joshua Dobbs, and none other than Colin Kaepernick.
While the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback hasn’t played since 2016, many young black QBs view him as a role model for his success in the league and the sacrifices he made for social change. Not only could he give Fields advice on how to be a better quarterback, but also how better to handle a public image. Everybody got a lot out of their throwing drills, and Fields looked sharp.
He seemed to showcase some of that retooled throwing motion again.

Some may not think Kaepernick has much to offer Fields. That isn’t true. Here is a young man who came into a delicate situation in San Francisco and led the team to a Super Bowl. He came yards away from winning it too. If anybody can offer tips on how to take one’s game to the next level, it’s him. Give Fields credit for not worrying about public backlash for working with the controversial former quarterback.

In his mind, it is all about getting better. He seems to have the connection with Darnell Mooney solidified. The next step for the Bears is trying to find him more weapons and better protection. Results from those efforts over the first week of free agency are somewhat mixed. At least on paper. Their two most notable additions include wide receiver Byron Pringle, a decent-if-unremarkable #4 option from Kansas City, and center Lucas Patrick. He had a solid run last year in Green Bay replacing the injured Josh Myers.
Justin Fields faces a difficult climb to respectability
Kaepernick had instant success in San Francisco because he landed on a team towards the end of their construction. They had a great offensive line, a dominant running game, and good receivers. Not to mention a Pro Bowl tight end. Fields arrived in Chicago during the middle of a clear transition period. The defense is aging, and the offense lacked enough blue-chip talent. That is why a new GM and head coach were brought in.
Ryan Poles understands he must focus his rebuild around Justin Fields, but he intends to do it his way. That means building through the draft and using free agency to plug minor holes. It has frustrated Bears fans to no end, but one can’t fault the man’s philosophy. When executed correctly, such an approach has often led to sustained success for many organizations.
It is about patience.
Yes, the Bears are on a timeline with Fields’ rookie contract, but they can’t lack that push them into impulsive moves. That is how Pace got into trouble a few years ago. Poles has no intention of doing the same. His aggressiveness will come in time. Once he’s confident they’ve built a strong foundation through the draft.
