Justin Fields Calls New Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy A “Mastermind”

-

Justin Fields has worked with several accomplished offensive coaches during his football career. He spent a season under Jim Chaney at Georgia in 2018, the same man who developed Drew Brees at Purdue. Then he spent two years playing for Ryan Day at Ohio State, arguably one of the most respected offensive minds in college football today. So the Chicago Bears quarterback has learned from some accomplished people.

That is why his comments about new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy were eye-opening. Fields took a few minutes to speak with longtime NFL insider Peter King of NBC Sports after practice. He discussed what it’s like dealing with the pressure of playing for a franchise with such an ugly QB history and how things are progressing in the new offense. He was then asked whether he felt the new system fits him as a player. It was here Fields offered some unprompted praise for Getsy.

Justin Fields isn’t prone to big statements like that.

He’ll praise coaches and teammates but has never used powerful words like “mastermind” and “the best” QB coach he’s ever had. That is not something to ignore. It is the clearest indication yet that Fields has bought into this new coaching staff and what they’re trying to do. The signs are showing up on the field too. Efficiency has improved for the young quarterback during training camp. The interceptions from last year are down, and he’s getting better at operating in situational football.

Getsy is encouraged by his progress. Every time he speaks, it feels like he has a clear plan for where Justin Fields is going. Friday’s practice was a perfect example, having the defense run 3-4 scouting looks because two teams in the division utilize that scheme. Every detail matters. It all fits together. Once a quarterback masters the details, things will start clicking. Fans have seen glimpses of it even during these early training camp practices.

It offers hope that everybody is on the same page. That hasn’t always been the case. Mitch Trubisky and Matt Nagy had issues. Jay Cutler never meshed with any of his offensive coordinators. Not since Kyle Orton and Ron Turner has it felt like those two spots were in sync. Refreshing might be the best word to describe Fields’ statement.

This team will win the Superbowl THIS YEAR! Just kidding though. The hype is at its highest right now. I do like what they are doing but am so ready to see some fake game action so we can see how they really look sort of.

Luke Getsy will be successful in 2022 and enough that in 2023 there will be teams sniffing around to offer him an HC job. The question will not be does he accept, the question will be does LGetsy believe in R Poles, Eberflus, and J Fields to get him into a super bowl?
