The Chicago Bears flipped a future 4th round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for All-Pro guard Joe Thuney. Their intent was obvious. Caleb Williams needed better protection. Despite being 31 years old, Thuney continues to show he is Hall of Fame material with consistent excellence every season. The Chiefs didn’t want to trade him. They were left with little choice due to salary cap issues. His stability and experience will be an immediate booster to the Bears’ interior blocking. However, the extent of his value doesn’t end there.
Thuney explained to Bears media at his introductory press conference that he offers something else Williams can take full advantage of. He is one of the precious few players in the entire NFL who had the chance to play with both Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. The two men hold a combined ten Lombardi trophies and are considered the gold standard of modern quarterbacks. Much of that success came from their laser focus on details and willingness to make necessary sacrifices.

Joe Thuney is a terrific sounding board for Williams.
The Bears’ young quarterback has said multiple times that his goal is to win more Super Bowls than Brady. Well, to do that, he must embrace the grind. GM Ryan Poles admitted Williams tried to skip some steps in his development last season, which led to his consistency issues. Joe Thuney will be able to stay in his ear about making sure not to cut corners in the process. If he truly wants to be great, every single detail matters. Head coach Ben Johnson will be on him about that as well. It feels like, for the first time, the Bears have put a legitimate support group in place that can make Williams better. By staying on him from both the coaching and teammate angles, he should take big steps forward in 2025.
Hey I’m all for it. Help Caleb by keeping him off the turf. Let’s get it done this year boys.
Has Nate Davis or Chase Claypool been signed by anyone, they are free agents. Velus Jone started to sign wit the Saints but dropped the pen and lost the contract.
Bet he played basketball with MJ too.
The biggest benefit that Joe Tuney offers is that Lazy Nate Davis is gone. However, I am sure Caleb learned what a “lookout” block was from Lazy Nate.
Best to have the sounding boards on the front lines rather than on the sidelines for Caleb, though too late for Fields.
