Nobody expected the Chicago Bears to be here after only two games. Yet that is the reality. Losing to Green Bay and Tampa Bay alone isn’t the problem. It’s how they lost. Both were by double-digits in which the Bears committed a series of self-inflicted wounds that cost them innumerable opportunities. That speaks to coaching issues. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong for Matt Eberflus. His players aren’t adhering to his H.I.T.S principle. Even worse, both of his coordinator hires in Luke Getsy and Alan Williams, look like colossal miscalculations.
Eberflus has lost 12 games in a row dating back to last season. His 3-16 record is the worst start a Bears head coach has ever had. Justin Fields has regressed at the quarterback position. The defense is still among the worst in the NFL. There is nothing to suggest at the moment that Eberflus has this team pointed in the right direction. That is why comments from NFL insider Benjamin Allbright were enlightening. He has it on pretty good authority that if things don’t improve in the next couple of months, the likelihood is high that everybody is gone.
Matt Eberflus needs a win in the worst way.
The Bears haven’t won a game since their blowout victory over New England last October. There is a realistic possibility they could go a full calendar year without experiencing that again. It likely won’t happen next week as they visit Kansas City to play Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. After that, it’s back home to Chicago against the Denver Broncos. That might be their most winnable game on the schedule in the first half of the season. Then it’s off to Washington, who are 2-0, and then back home against Minnesota, who swept them last year.
If the Bears continue to look the way they have, their prospects for a good season are out the window. Matt Eberflus has promised many things, but it’s still a bottom-line business. You have to win. It’s not about making the playoffs. Yet progress is expected. Around 6-8 wins is the reasonable area for a team in the second year of a rebuild. That prospect isn’t looking too good. If Allbright is correct, then Eberflus would become only the second Bears coach in the Super Bowl era to not see a third season.
