Two sides are forming in the Justin Fields debate. Many Chicago Bears fans feel it’s way too early to pass judgment on the young quarterback. He doesn’t have a good offensive line, and his receivers are subpar. Still, others aren’t buying into that excuse. They claim Fields is too flawed as a passer. He holds the ball too long and can’t complete the layup throws when they’re available. Even average NFL quarterbacks should be able to throw for 200 yards in a game. Fields has only done it once this season.
Longtime NFL insider Adam Caplan spoke on the situation on SportsGrid Radio with Scott Ferrall. He didn’t mince words. From the way he spoke, there is an indication the Bears think they have better passing game personnel than the numbers show. It is just that Fields can seem to get them the ball consistently enough. That goes back to missing the layups and holding the ball too long.
Make no mistake. There aren’t any plans to go with Trevor Siemian. The Bears will stick with Fields for the rest of the season. However, Caplan indicates there is a real possibility GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus will consider alternatives if he doesn’t improve.
Justin Fields can’t lean on excuses forever.
Yes, the situation around him is far from ideal. Still, good quarterbacks usually find a way to work around such problems. Data shows Fields is responsible for 16 pressures and five sacks he’s suffered this season. He has an average time of 3.42 seconds to throw, which is the highest in the NFL. Some of that is in the pocket, and some are thanks to his scrambling. Yet he is the only QB in the top 10 of that category with a sub-90 passer rating (62.1).

Nobody wants Justin Fields to be a failure. Far from it. Yet, at some point, the eye test can’t be ignored. Lousy supporting cast or not, good QBs should at least be able to play average football. He isn’t close to that outside his second half in Minnesota. For all his toughness and grit, the Bears have to wonder if he can play the position like a professional rather than an elite athlete simulating the backyard days.
The final 11 games are more important for him than anybody wants to admit.
When you are bad, you are bad. Fields is not a good passer, he is a runner. But Bear’s teams tend to give the benefit of the doubt to bad QBs until it is too late and the season is blown. A good QB, i.e., Mahomes, Herbert, Josh Allen win and look the part. Fields will break (as in, sack/injury), before he becomes a good NFL QB.
Relax people. Way to go Lambert you succeeded in getting them riled up over nonsensical opinions.🤣
is anybody watching the same game? Fields is running for his life about 85% of the game. Bears receivers have the 5th highest drop rate in the league. But everybody is quick to blame a 2 year qb. Put tom brady on this team and see how good he is. Bet he doesnt do much better. Even some of the writers on this site have said 8 of the 11 starters wouldn’t even be back ups on most teams. How about waiting til next season when the bears are actually able to get some quality help before passing judgement
They arent going to bail on Fields before next season lmfao. He just finished his 17th game in the NFL.
Caplan and Farrel are not the ones to listen to. They are football morons. Get him a few decent o/l and receivers and Fields will flourish. Its simple the BEARS do not like to spend their $$$ , thus we have what we have. PATHETIC!
