The Chicago Bears were plunged into their first real ownership flux earlier this year when Virginia McCaskey passed away at the age of 102. Not since the death of her father, George Halas, in 1983 had there been uncertainty about the direction at the top of the organization. It’s remarkable how stable things have been for the Bears going back over a hundred years. Some have wondered if that was about to change. Rumors have persisted that some of the younger generation in the family prefer to sell the team. George McCaskey finally got his chance to clarify the situation.
The team chairman spoke with the media at the annual NFL Owners Meetings. He discussed various topics, including the decision to vote for banning the infamous Tush Push play. Inevitably, the subject came around to the ownership situation. McCaskey didn’t beat around the bush. He made it clear that there is zero intention of selling the team. His mother spent a lot of time preparing her children for what to do after she passed in order to keep the franchise in the family. That is what he intends to do.

George McCaskey has stuck to his guns.
Since the conversation started years ago, he’s made it clear that there was never any intention of selling the team. The goal has always been to maintain the Halas lineage by keeping the Bears in the bloodline. While he understands people are upset with him because of the team’s struggles in recent years, that won’t stop him from trying to get things turned around. His love for the franchise has never wavered. If nothing else, fans can at least take solace in knowing that George McCaskey cares about the Bears, which might not be the case with a new owner. They would likely see it as nothing more than a cash cow to milk for maximum profits. The McCaskeys believe in what the Bears stand for, what Halas built all those years ago. That legacy will continue into the future.

Always the victim, never the perpetrator.
Seldom correct, usually authoritarian.
Poorly educated and inherited the family business.
Careful now, Ari might move the team to Tokyo or Tel Aviv. That been the rumor for many years.
This all makes me laugh. Money talks more than anything that comes out of George’s mouth. Once the stadium is done then the team price goes up and the Mckaskeys will be rich. Ari Emanuel (CEO of endeavor and TKO holdings) has already shown big interest in owning a team and obviously he’s a big bears fan. Goerge will be ready to sell once the stadium is done and the team is at its top value.
Now George voted to ban the tush push. Hello! George knows nothing about playing football. The only thing he has ever done was live off the $$ the team made and inherited the Bears. He shouldn’t have any say in how the game is played. His Grandfather actually played and coached and helped to build the NFL. He would fire George McCrapskey.
I feel like there must be some dissention on the board as to selling the Bears. He says they have to “stick together,” which I’m interpreting as there may be some dissenting voices among the heirs as to selling the team. I was praying that her death would lead to the team finally being sold, but that may not be the case. This ownership has fielded a laughing stock of a team for much of the past 50 years. While I am impressed with the new coaching hire and their concentration on the O line finally in this offseason, which… Read more »
