Chicago Bears legend Gary Fencik isn’t prone to making snide comments. He didn’t start at the team’s 100th anniversary celebration in Rosemont. However, he did make a roundabout snipe at former Bears head coach John Fox. The way it came up was the interesting part. He was actually asked his impressions of Matt Nagy and the job he’s done thus far.
In the midst of his answer, Fencik actually used Fox as an example. He made it clear that he liked the former coach. Not a surprise. Fox was known for being a player’s coach with a deep defensive background. However, there was one weakness to his style that ended up ruining his time in Chicago.
Gary Fencik puts voice to many of the John Fox critics
It’s interesting that he makes that point. One of the constant issues that a lot of people had with Fox was his stand-offish attitude towards the media. He did things for charity and the likes but always seemed to keep everyone outside the building at the farthest length possible. This was done by restricting access at practice and being intentionally unforthcoming on the injury status of his players.
Combined with the constant losing and the lack of any forward-thinking with his schemes, fans began to detest him. They were being treated as outsiders. A necessary evil. Is it any coincidence that Nagy completely turned things around when he arrived? One has to wonder if his personable style was a big part of why he was hired.

The man is already a favorite among fans, and it’s not just because of the winning. He’s likable and doesn’t mind telling the truth when it is obvious the information won’t have any significant effect on his team. Espionage is fun and all, but when it gets turned on your own fans it only leads to a toxic relationship.
