Former Teammate Opens Up On Caleb Williams Rookie Year

-

The Bears were a mess last season — everyone knows it. The coaching staff didn’t do rookie quarterback Caleb Williams any favors, as both offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and head coach Matt Eberflus were fired midway through the season. The dysfunction didn’t stop there, as veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis shared during an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Thursday.

Lewis spoke highly of Williams, praising his ability to make “hard stuff look very easy.” When Cowherd asked if the inconsistency last season was a concern for Williams’ development, Lewis defended the rookie by highlighting the dysfunction surrounding the team.

“In his defense, obviously with our offense, the firing of coaches — it was a lot going on. He was trying to do the best he could.”

Marcedes Hopes to Return To Chicago

Lewis believes that the arrival of new head coach Ben Johnson will help Williams in the long run and said he’s excited to see how it unfolds next season.

As for his own future, Lewis made it clear he wants to play a 20th NFL season. When asked about his ideal landing spot, he said Chicago would be his top choice since he’s been with the Bears for the past two years and would like to finish his career there. Whether the Bears will bring him back remains to be seen, but his veteran presence could still be valuable despite last season’s struggles.

rcheezy is cheesiest and cheekiest. Yup, keep Marcedes on the Bears’ welfare list along with other Poles’ guys both on and off the roster. He and Kiran can hold hands with Kramer.

No room for sentimentality. It’s over. Smythe is the blocking TE now. Need another pass catching guy now.

I hope they’ll let Mercedes finish his career in Chicago. Our TE room and even our offense can use a man of his caliber as a mentor. The crazy part is he can still block fairly well. But you know damn well when he’s in there no way the ball’s coming his way lol. Then again that could be the perfect recipe for a goal line play. Either way I respect this man and hope he can end his career his own way. 🫡

What a loser mentality. Save it for your dog when he dies.

I like Lewis – I remember when he was drafted, I was hoping the Bears would grab him, no such luck. If the Bears don’t draft a TE, give the man a vet min deal, let him be the 3rd TE, and pick up a UDFA for the practice squad.
