The Chicago Bears offense finished pretty much where everybody expected it would last season, ranked 28th in the league. However, for a good chunk of the year between early October and late November, people got a serious glimpse of potential from the unit. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy crafted the most dangerous ground attack in football. Cole Kmet had a breakout year at tight end. Khalil Herbert flourished on the ground. The remarkable exploits of quarterback Justin Fields guided all of it.
His ability as a runner morphed into something only guys like Michael Vick and Lamar Jackson have accomplished. As for the passing, it improved, but there are still areas he has to work on before people believe Fields can be a true franchise guy. That doesn’t seem to bother former scout Bucky Brooks. He explained on NFL.com that the Bears’ offense is among the most likely to have a massive breakout season this year thanks to Fields’ ongoing evolution and the new array of talent around him.
Ignore them at your own risk.
“Chicago gave Fields a serious vote of confidence by trading away the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft — and in doing so, the Bears also gave their young field general a true No. 1 receiver (D.J. Moore). That’s not the only notable veteran addition, either, as GM Ryan Poles also boosted the offensive line (OG Nate Davis), tight end position (Robert Tonyan) and backfield (D’Onta Foreman) in free agency. In the draft, the Bears grabbed a premier people mover in Round 1 (OT Darnell Wright) and then added a couple more enticing playmakers in Round 4 (RB Roschon Johnson and WR Tyler Scott).
All of that gives Fields a far deeper and more imposing supporting cast than he enjoyed last season. Consequently, I expect the former No. 11 overall pick to take a big step in his development as a dual-threat playmaker. The Bears’ offense has enough weaponry to produce fireworks against defenses ill-equipped to defend a balanced attack with explosive potential.”
The Chicago Bears have something cooking.
It feels like the Bears offense has legitimate pieces in place for the first time in years. Their offensive line is laden with a good mix of proven veterans (Cody Whitehair and Nate Davis) and talented youngsters (Braxton Jones, Teven Jenkins, and Darnell Wright). They’ve also added multiple weapons with explosive potential in the passing game, headlined by wide receiver D.J. Moore and tight end Robert Tonyan. Both have reportedly looked great in OTAs and minicamps. That is before even mentioning Fields.
Coaches and teammates alike have said the young quarterback looks so different from where he was last season. He’s calmer, more confident, and is taking a much more vocal role in the direction of the offense. He’s calling more audibles, changing protections, and addressing where and how he wants receivers to run routes. It seems his comfort in the offensive system has grown. If everybody stays healthy and plays up to expectations, what Brooks says is true. This could be a fun offense to watch.
