Former Head Coach Picks Justin Fields As 2023 Breakout Candidate

-

Jay Gruden knows a thing or two about quarterbacks. He played the position at Louisville and later in the Arena Football League. Eventually, he transitioned to coaching, where he became a prominent offensive coordinator in the NFL. Most people remember his tenure as a head coach with the Washington Redskins. Over his career, he’s helped develop guys like Andy Dalton and Kirk Cousins into Pro Bowlers. So when he had the chance to weigh in on Justin Fields, it was interesting to hear his thoughts.

The former head coach spoke with Jade McCarthy of The 33rd Team about who Gruden’s pick would be for breakout candidate this coming season. Fields was the first name that popped into his head.

“I think people are hoping Justin Fields does that. His ability to run the football was incredible. I never saw that at Ohio State. I mean, he’s just running people over and around people. Now if he can get some of his passing skills a little bit more in tune (and) hit some drop-back throws, that will really put some fear in some defenses now.”

Gruden sees the clear picture. Fields has already evolved his game by becoming a more dangerous runner. If he can unlock that, it’s far from improbable that he can do the same through the air. It requires a better understanding of the offense, better weapons, and better protection. All issues were addressed this off-season.

Justin Fields isn’t ignorant of his situation.

The Bears have done everything in their power to make life easier for him. They added a viable #1 receiver in D.J. Moore to help open up the passing game. Darnell Wright and Nate Davis reinforce the offensive line at right tackle and right guard, allowing Cody Whitehair to bolster the center spot. Protection should be better this season as well. Luke Getsy’s offense is also entering its second year. All signs point to Fields having a far greater mastery of the verbiage and subtleties.

If everybody can stay mostly healthy, this offense should take a significant step forward. Justin Fields will be the key. While his numbers weren’t always great, there were lots of flashes of what he could do. Teammates and coaches alike agree he was the one carrying the team for long stretches last season. Now he may finally have help. We saw what happened in college when he had quality teammates. Gruden is correct. One more positive step as a passer could make him one of the most feared QBs in the game.
