Former GM Can’t Believe Bears Stole Roschon Johnson In Draft

-

The conversations follow a familiar pattern when talking about the Chicago Bears’ 2023 draft. Most like the addition of Darnell Wright in the 1st round, even though some feel he went earlier than he should’ve. Day 2 was the most uncertain as evaluators weren’t wild about the additions of Gervon Dexter or Zacch Pickens. However, attitudes changed on Day 3, where GM Ryan Poles drew rave reviews for his work in the 4th and 5th rounds. Probably no pick got more lavish praise than snagging Texas running back Roschon Johnson.

This might confuse some people. Johnson spent most of his time in college as a backup to eventual 8th overall pick Bijan Robinson. Yet people who watched him on tape immediately saw a hidden gem. Johnson was the type of talent that would start on almost any other roster in college football. One person that was shocked the Bears got him so late was former Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman. He believes under normal circumstances, Johnson would’ve gone in the 2nd or 3rd round. So to get him in the middle of the 4th was terrific value.

It’s important to remember the Bears’ setup at the position. D’Onta Foreman is only here on a one-year deal. Khalil Herbert is a good fit for their offense but doesn’t offer the same versatility Johnson does. He’s not a great pass-catcher and is a liability in pass protection. The rookie is much better in both categories. It isn’t hard to imagine Poles envisioning Johnson as the eventual successor at the position within the next year or so. He has that kind of upside. It also doesn’t hurt he has outstanding character.

Aside from that, there is no question the Bears have a far deeper and more diverse running back room than they did a year ago. Roschon Johnson was the missing piece they needed. He can fill the void as both a pass-catcher and pass-protector. If that’s not enough, don’t be surprised if he becomes an instant presence on special teams. The kid is intense and driven. He’s also unselfish. Guys like that almost always do well. The only thing he’ll need is an opportunity to prove it.
