An article from The Athletic’s Adam Jahns revealed a rather telling quote from the recently fired Bears offense coordinator, Mark Helfrich. The quote pertained to the Bears disappointing season opener against the Green Bay Packers. Helfrich revisited the concern saying this:
“The train wreck that happened the first week, like I said at the time, we didn’t handle it great,” he said. “Some of that stuff is stuff you just need to immediately flush and move on. Some of it is an issue.
“Again, that’s players and coaches, not just one guy. But it’s the same song and dance of some things here that we need to flush and some things that (Trubisky) needs to trust a little bit more and build a little more on. It’s hard in the scope of how the season has gone to trust that. That’s hard.”
There is a lot to unpack with this quote but one of the first things that stuck out to me happened to be in the very first sentence:
“we didn’t handle it great”
I think we all understand how frustrating that week one loss had to be. But at the same time, this is the NFL. It’s a week to week league. When you lose a tough game like that there isn’t any time to just sit and dwell on it. When it comes to the entirety of the quote, it seems that the whole team, not just Trubisky, struggled with getting over the frequently tough losses that plagued the team in 2019. It was something they weren’t all that accustom to experiencing after that wildly successful 12-4 season just two years ago. All this being said, the team did find a way to finish the season at 8-8.

Although there are a lot of areas to improve on, this team isn’t that far off from being competitive once again.
However, the team’s future success will no doubt hinge on how both the front office and the players attack this off-season.
