Follow this logic. The Green Bay Packers go 13-3 in 2019. They reach the NFC championship. One win from the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, your Hall of Fame quarterback is hampered by a lack of options at wide receiver. Davante Adams has 138 yards but the next closest was Allen Lazard with 36. It’s clear Aaron Rodgers needs another viable weapon on the outside. How do you respond to this? By drafting his replacement instead with Jordan Love.
The Packers seem so confident that they’ll get over the hump this year. This despite Rodgers being a year older and the NFC North alone looking far more improved from last season. Instead, they drafted “for the future” and frankly have had one of the most head-scratching offseasons in the NFL. A lot of execs around the league were especially baffled by the Love move according to Albert Breer of the MMQB.
AFC GM: “Jordan Love. Why?”
AFC scouting director: “QB Jordan Love to Green Bay. Too many holes to waste Aaron Rodgers’s backend—how long will he be there and is he good with the head coach?”
AFC exec: “Jordan Love to the Packers is top of the head scratchers because of the presence of Aaron Rodgers and their need of wide receivers.”
Jordan Love move is a lottery ticket
Here’s the reality. The Packers already have a top all-time QB in the fold. Rodgers can win them a Super Bowl. Yet rather than do everything possible to exploit his window while it’s still open, they spend a precious draft grabbing a guy they feel can be his successor. No doubt visions of 2005 dancing in their heads. While Love is talented, he is not what Rodgers was back then. He was the fourth guy off the board and one many have serious questions about.
Nevermind the fact that Green Bay also grabbed a running back and H-back in subsequent rounds after that. Nothing about this draft puts the team on a stronger footing to get over the hump this year. Meanwhile, the Saints drafted Drew Brees more protection and a talented tight end. Pittsburgh grabbed Ben Roethlisberger a big, athletic wide receiver. The Colts did the same for Philip Rivers. None of those teams are leaning on what they have. Why? It’s reckless to think the quarterback who is a year older from not winning the title last season will suddenly lift the ship any higher this season.

It won’t be surprising if a few years down the road many look at this draft as a huge turning point in Packers history.
