The preseason is almost over, which means that teams will soon have to cut down their rosters. However, there’s a rumor that Bears General Manager, Ryan Poles, might be planning a major move. ESPN Chicago’s Carmen DeFalco talked about these reports, saying that Ryan Poles has actually contacted the Kansas City Chiefs General Manager, Brett Veach, regarding the possibility of acquiring superstar defensive tackle Chris Jones.
“According to some, Ryan Poles has called Brett Veach about Chris Jones.”
Chris Jones Would Accelerate The Bears Timeline But At What Cost?
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the Bears and Chris Jones being talked about together. Right now, Jones is unhappy because he wants a bigger salary. He’s in the final year of his $80 million contract that he signed in 2020. But the Chiefs, don’t want to pay as much as he’s asking for. Jones wants around $30 million each year in an extension, which is more than what the Chiefs are willing to give. This deal would put the Chiefs in a tough situation financially, so it’s understandable they won’t meet his demands.
Now, let’s talk about the Bears. They might not be too keen on paying that much either. However, they do have a young and promising quarterback, Justin Fields, who is on a rookie contract for two more years. If they can negotiate Jones’s salary down a bit while still paying him well, it might make sense for both sides. Ryan Poles needs to find out what the Chiefs are asking for in exchange for Jones. This scenario is somewhat similar to the trade Ryan Pace made for Khalil Mack, but giving up two first round picks would be crazy. The Bears absolutely can not give up that type of draft capital.

Jones is a fantastic player, no doubt. He had a great season last year with 15 sacks and 45 total pressures. He can really impact a game on his own. If the Bears can land Jones, they would become a playoff contender instantly. However, they would have to give up one of their first-round picks to make this happen. And if they decide to do that, they should use their own pick, which won’t be as good as the one they got from Carolina for the 2024 draft. But with that being said, we are not completely sure how third year quarterback, Justin Fields, will develop. Again, this situation reminds me of when the Bears traded for Mack before the 2018 season. They took a risk making that deal despite uncertainty about their own quarterback at the time, Mitchell Trubisky. Looking back, they might not have made the same decision if they knew Trubisky’s limitations.
This potential trade for Jones would be a major move, marking a new era for Ryan Poles. It’s a decision that could define his legacy as the Bears General Manager. Let’s wait and see what unfolds.
