Draft Insider Calls Chicago Bears The Best Fit For Top QB In 2021

-

Mitch Trubisky and Nick Foles are the center of attention in 2020 for the Chicago Bears. One of them will end up the starter when the regular season kicks off. It’s hoped whoever it is ends up becoming an effective player for an offense that has struggled to find consistency at that position for many years.

The truth is not a lot of people are buying into such an idea. Most have already given up on Trubisky. If anyone has a chance to survive beyond this year, it’s probably Foles given his tight connections to the coaching staff and strong track record on the field when healthy. When it comes to the experts though, the majority feel a totally different QB will be the guy by 2021.

Count Matt Miller of Bleacher Report among them. He feels Matt Nagy should be granted an opportunity to go get his own quarterback of choice. In fact, there is one in the upcoming draft class that fits his style perfectly.

“If Matt Nagy is allowed a chance to pick his own quarterback for the Bears, there is no better fit than the dual-threat, strong-armed Trey Lance. After throwing for 28 touchdowns and no interceptions last year—while running for another 14—Lance will be one of the most exciting players in the 2021 class if he declares as a redshirt sophomore.”

Chicago Bears may have a hard time buying into Lance

Lance is unquestionably the player with the most hype going into next year. How often does a guy throw almost 30 TDs in a season without a single interception? Never. This is basically confirmation to everybody that he is a lock for success in the NFL. Except it is never that simple. Yes, the guy played outstanding but context is needed.

Lance quarterbacked for the most dominant program in the FCS. A team that has won eight of the last nine national championships. So it’s not like he suddenly elevated them to a higher plane. He was surrounded by superior talent and benefitted from playing against second-rate opponents all season long. Would he have that same success in the SEC or Big Ten?

Then there’s the fact he played just one season. A season where he threw less than 300 passes. He’s still inexperienced despite his success. Can you imagine the Bears taking a chance on an athletic QB with one year of starting experience in the 1st round again? Fans might burn Halas Hall to the ground.

Still, it’s an interesting scenario worth following as the next several months unfold.
