David Montgomery is an inspirational young man. He came from the toughest of backgrounds, surviving the poor neighborhoods of Cincinnati where gang culture and gun violence were prevalent. It would’ve been so easy for him to get absorbed into that culture and perhaps either end up dead or in prison before reaching his 21st birthday.
It came close. Without a father figure to idolize, he looked up to other older male figures around him. However, as the years progressed a number of those friends either ended up murdered or in jail. This had a profound impact on Montgomery. He soon realized he wanted out of that environment and was prepared to do whatever it took to escape.
That is what led him to football. After dominating in high school, he landed a scholarship at Iowa State and began his climb to the NFL. As things progressed, he became the focal point of their offense. All told he would score 26 touchdowns. One interesting thing that surfaced during each one was the V sign he’d throw up with his finger each time he scored.
It turns out there is a specific and rather tragic meaning behind this ritual. Montgomery explained during his “Meet the Rookies” episode.

David Montgomery proves he’ll never forget where he came from
Not only is such a tribute touching, but it also showcases how the young running back is able to keep himself grounded amidst this stardom he continues to build. Many young men his age would have a big head by now, totally self-absorbed in their own success. Montgomery isn’t letting that happen. Sure he’s confident in his ability, but he also knows just how close he came to going down a far darker road.
The Bears for one are grateful he made the effort to rescue himself from that situation. They genuinely believe he has a bright future in Chicago. One that can serve as a guiding light to thousands of young men who are experiencing the same traumas he did. Every time he scores a touchdown, he’ll be able to send that message that there are better ways to pay tribute to those loved and lost.
