The Chicago Bears entered April thinking the running back position might be set aside from another minor addition in the draft. Khalil Herbert and new arrival D’Onta Foreman could form a solid tandem in the backfield. However, the mark of any good GM is never ignoring the possibility of getting even better. Ryan Poles has said his goal is to get the best players possible on the field for his team. Such an opportunity might be looming as the Minnesota Vikings approach a crossroads with star running back Dalvin Cook.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, there is a growing possibility they will either trade or cut him before the draft in less than two weeks. Minnesota doesn’t have enough cap space to sign their incoming draft class. Releasing Cook would get them just under $5.9 million in relief. While a trade is possible, teams likely won’t want to bring in his large contract that costs $14-15 million per year through 2025. If released, he’d be free to sign anywhere and at a rate that teams would find much more comfortable.
The Bears have every reason to pursue Dalvin Cook.
For one, they have more than enough money to make it happen. They also run the same wide-zone offense that Cook had his best season in back in 2020 under Gary Kubiak. Chicago is a team that likes to run the ball and there is no doubt he’d see plenty of lanes with the looming threat of Justin Fields always there. Last but not least, he’d get to stay in the division and have a shot at revenge against Minnesota. From the Bears’ perspective, they would get a play that has a far more well-rounded game than Herbert or Foreman.
In addition to being an excellent runner, he is also dangerous in the passing game as a receiver. He would give Fields a dimension he didn’t really have last year. Dalvin Cook is a star and he’s still only 27 years old. There is no reason to think he shouldn’t have two or three good seasons left in him, especially if the Bears manage his load carefully. While the odds favor him trying to land with a contender, there are reasons to think Chicago has a shot if they decide to make the pursuit.

The thought of Dalvin being a Bear definitely intrigues me, 27 is not young for an RB, he has been the bell cow over there for some time, there is some mileage on those tires, but……… seeing him in this backfield would be a lot like Monty, but with all due respect to Monty, ( I really like Monty) I still place Dalvin to be better in my book.
