Colin Cowherd Hearing New Bears Regime Are “Not Sold” On Justin Fields

-

Nothing is more important to a football organization than the dynamic between the triumvirate. That is the general manager, the head coach, and the quarterback. When those three are in harmony, good things tend to happen for a franchise. That has been the problem for the Chicago Bears going back many years. Rex Grossman saw the coach who drafted him get fired after one season. The same was true for Mitch Trubisky and now again with Justin Fields.

The GM that drafted them staying in charge made the previous two work. Jerry Angelo remained in place in 2004, as did Ryan Pace in 2017. That isn’t the case this time. Ryan Poles replaced Pace one year after Fields arrived in 2021. That means the two guys in charge now had zero input on the quarterback’s selection. In situations like this, history says the possibility is strong that a change may come soon. At least that is what Colin Cowherd made it seem like. The host of The Herd radio program told insider Mike Silver what he’d been hearing from Halas Hall.

“How about this? The current GM of the Bears did not draft Justin Fields. The current coach of the Bears had no reported fondness of Justin Fields. I have been told they aren’t necessarily sold on Justin Fields.”

Of course, they aren’t sold on Justin Fields.

There is no reason for them to be. Poles and Eberflus didn’t draft him. They saw what happened in his rookie year with the ten interceptions, 12 fumbles, and 36 sacks. There is nothing to suggest yet that he is a star in the making. So self-respecting football guys would walk into those jobs 100% convinced the QB they’re inheriting is “the one” when there is no visual evidence to suggest as much. All Poles and Eberflus know right now are two things. Fields is very talented and willing to put in the work.

Poles and Eberflus want to see more. They need to see progress. There is no reason for them to make any long-term commitments right now. Justin Fields is the starter and will be treated that way moving forward. If he shows some progress this coming season, it will remain that way into 2023 as the regime works to rebuild the roster. If he struggles again, then sure. There is a possibility they might consider a quarterback change.

Cowherd would do well not to make it seem like they’re already planning such a move. That is not the case.

Colin “Blowhard” Cowherd” is a legend in his own mind. Kenny’s comments are spot on.

Grossman and Trubisky? Yeah, those are a couple of huge success stories. Angelo and Pace were HOF GM material. And all GMs are completely incapable of liking anything about players they did not draft. And all politicians are honest. And the check is in the mail. And mine tastes different.

Hmm. The coach that drafted Mitch was John Fox. Except he didn’t even know Pace was pursuing Mitch — he was kept out of the loop. Essentially, this story is that the new regime is hopeful that Fields will be good but they aren’t sure yet. Amazing insight! There’s only one person who is sure about Fields and that is his mother. The rest of us need to see it.
