Cole Kmet Mic’d Up Is Entertainment You Didn’t Know You Wanted

-

The Chicago Bears have high hopes for their 2020 draft class this year. None more so than Cole Kmet. The Notre Dame tight end was their first pick. GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy lauded him for his great mix of size and athleticism to go with a strong upper and lower body. Yet what probably stood out to them the most was his personality. Not only was he a great teammate by every account, but also one of the most football intelligent players they’ve drafted.

All of that was on display in the final episode of “1920 Football Drive,” the Bears’ miniseries covering the team’s training camp journey. Kmet was their choice to be mic’d up for the practice festivities at Soldier Field. It gave the rookie a little taste of what playing there will be like on game days. Yet he might’ve been the most entertaining thing about that event.

He and Jimmy Graham went back and forth over whether he deserved a bigger locker for holding the mic. He explained to a coach why he’s always hated the color yellow because of Notre Dame’s rivalry with Michigan. So one can imagine he’ll love the Green Bay Packers. Then he got razzing from teammates for attempting to spike the ball after a touchdown only to see it slip out of his hands.

Cole Kmet is already becoming a favorite in the locker room

Interspersed with his fun interactions off the field were several periods of physicality on it. Kmet isn’t afraid to get after it. That pop he delivered on a kickoff gunner that sent the red cap on the guy’s helmet flying was something. He also wasn’t afraid to mix it up as a blocker on offense too. All this while performing well in the receiving game alongside Graham.

It’s easy to see why the coaches love him already. The guy shows all the making of a true football player. Somebody who should have success in the future. The Bears don’t seem shy about involving him in the offense right away. He and Graham could form quite a tandem on the field. Something defenses may have a hard time trying to contain.
