The Chicago Bears suffered another heartbreaking loss last week to their rival, the Green Bay Packers. The game ended with a potential game-winning field goal attempt by the Bears, which was blocked. However, controversy arose after many pointed out that the Packers appeared to commit a penalty during the play. Specifically, they hit Bears long snapper Scott Daly while his head was down after the snap, a clear penalty in the NFL rulebook.
This controversial play has been analyzed extensively on sports shows and podcasts throughout the week. The Bears even submitted the play to the NFL for review, but no decision has been made yet. Unfortunately, even if the NFL acknowledges the mistake, the Bears won’t get a chance to replay the down or change the outcome. At most, the league might admit the error, which is rare in such situations.
Bears tight end Cole Kmet discussed the incident on his podcast, The 85 with Cole Kmet, stating that he firmly believes the Packers committed a penalty and that it was obvious.
“I thought they hit Scott (Daly) pretty blatantly there on that play which you cannot do. We will see what the league comes back with and what they say.”
Regardless of which side you’re on regarding the Bears vs. Packers’ last play of the game, it’s rare to see such calls made at the end of a game. Referees usually hesitate to call penalties like these in those final moments. Similar to pass interference calls on Hail Mary passes. You just aren’t getting that call. However, it’s clear that in this instance, the Packers benefited from the refs’ restraint. That’s often how it goes in the NFL. Sometimes, luck plays a big role in games, and unfortunately for the Bears, they’ve found themselves on the losing side of most outcomes this season.

Cheaters! How dare they! But really man what good is a rule book if the officials ignore it? Rules is rules and the refs should enforce them at all times..beginning, middle, end. If not then just toss all the rules in the trash heap which is what Dave said they do in the final moments of a game. If that’s the case then put in the rule book that anything goes in the final moments of any NFL game. Might as well make it official and make it a rule.
Maybe their long snapper “trips” in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot in the near future…Maybe.
‘Sometimes luck plays a big roll” is true. Also true is some teams and their QB’s get preferential treatment. I don’t understand why. We are not one of those teams.
Flus not intelligent or mindful enough to warn about this potential infraction to the officials ahead of time. WOW! Does he even have a presence with the officials on the field?
They were not going to block the FG attempt coming around the edges but only up the middle, even with the new rule changes. He is a HC for the dolts and the Children of the Corn. Better use a bib then when eating.
Shame, shame, shame on those filthy Packers. If I had been the Bears HC I would have warned the officials to look for that up the middle-center infraction well before the FG attempt. Then things might have turned out differently with a penalty and closer kick, if needed. Somewhat like the Nebraska “fumblerooskie”. If you are going to run the ultimate of trick plays, then you want to contact the officials ahead of the play since they could be ignorant of such and call it illegal/blow a whistle–yes, you can outsmart the officials, so cover yourself on the play. It’s… Read more »
