The subject of kneeling before games is something the Chicago Bears know they can’t avoid. With the “Black Lives Matter” movement stronger than ever following the murder of George Floyd, several NFL players have already made it clear they plan to continue that protest on gamedays. Thus far the Bears hadn’t seen any of their own admit plans to do this. Head coach Matt Nagy dodged the question twice, stating the team planned to discuss the matter soon.
Apparently no one told Jordan Lucas.
Chicago signed the veteran safety back in March. Formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs, expectations are he’ll compete for a backup job with a primary role on special teams. Something he’s thrived at in recent years. When given the opening to answer that hot button question during his first meeting with Bears media? He didn’t hesitate. His plans without question involve kneeling before games.
How Chicago Bears react to Lucas’ statement will tell a lot
Nagy made it clear that he’d hoped such a touchy subject could be addressed as a team. So to see somebody break ranks like this might be a bit frustrating for him. Will the Bears respond with some sort of rebuke, publicly or otherwise? That seems unlikely. Nagy and the rest of the organization have shown their support for the players in this difficult situation. Odds are Lucas will not be the only one kneeling when games are finally played.

Lots of hard-line fans won’t like that, saying it disrespects the American flag. Odds are that argument, which was always erroneous, will fall on deaf ears this time around. Black players have no plans to let those people hijack the narrative this time around. Drew Brees found that out the hard way. The only thing for Nagy to do is what is best for his team. Show support and solidarity for what is right.
