Unless you were too busy shoveling snow this weekend to watch any of the NFL playoffs this weekend, you missed what was a stunning upset yesterday. Jordan Love dismantled the Dallas defense in a game that was never close. The Green Bay Packers have suddenly put the NFL on notice. They struggled to a 3-6 record before turning their season around. Quarterback Jordan Love is at the epicenter of the Packers’ improvement, going 6-2 and sneaking into the 7th seed of the playoffs.
Unknowingly, when Matt Eberflus plucked then-QB coach Luke Getsy from the Packers staff, he did a huge favor for the rival to the north. Matt LaFleur urged former QB coach Tom Clements out of retirement. What he has done to mentor Love is nothing short of spectacular.
Mentoring QBs to Great Success is Nothing New for Clements
Tom Clements played quarterback for Notre Dame from 1972 to 1974. The fighting Irish won the National Championship in 1973 after defeating Alabama 24-23 in the 1973 Orange Bowl. Clements drew little interest from NFL teams but found success in the CFL. He was named the Rookie of the Year in 1975. A 7-time All-Star, Clements won two Grey Cups (1976 and 1984). He was enshrined in the CFL Hall of Fame in 1994.

Clements guiding NFL quarterbacks to stellar seasons. What QBs have accomplished under his tutelage is brilliant. This is just a brief look at what his QBs have done under his watchful eye:
2000; Kansas City Chiefs, Elvis Grbac – Pro Bowl
2001; Pittsburgh Steelers, Kordell Stewart – Pro Bowl
2010; Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers – won Super Bowl
2019 – 2000; Arizona Cardinals, Kyler Murray, 2019 Offensive ROY. Pro Bowl 2019 and 2020
This year, Jordan Love was elevated to QB1 after Aaron Rodgers bolted for the New York Jets. Early in the season, fans were screaming for the Packers to tank in order to draft a new QB. Love has silenced all critics with his play over the second half of the year. He ended the season with 18 TDs and only one interception. His accuracy and timing improved greatly under the guidance of Tom Clements.
Whether Chicago decides to ride with Justin Fields for one more year, or draft a new QB, having Clements on the staff would bode well for either scenario.
Pooch, I always thought our downward trend started with the Kordell signing. JMO.
@Jioha
In a sense, GB promotes QB competition just by having the next guy waiting. Love is legit. He took some velocity off the ball early in the season, but he’s only going to get better GB is a good drafting team, lately taking WRs and TEs with large arcs of reception. It’s why we probably won’t retain Mooney. ICBW.
We don’t embrace QB competition, and we should.
@Dr Melhus
LaFleur knew what he was looking for in a quarterbacks coach.
These guys don’t need a long resume, they know what the quarterbacks need, and what the coach is doing. They can recognize improvement by the week, instead of just by the year.
@Jioha
What you said!!!!!!
@David
They can follow the idea without the Clements!
The key is: Do something right for a change.
Send Getsy back to Green Bay where he’ll ruin Jordan Love. He’ll make Love a mess.
